    Age Verification Question

    Regarding the new UK age verification laws that are soon to come into effect. I must admit I haven't really read up on it much but am just starting to think about it and how we can implement it. We're based in the UK so have to comply with the new UK age verification laws...I notice some websites are already making changes to their sites. Like the Wank it Now sites:

    They have removed all previews and model menus and trailers. I'm a bit baffled as to why they don't explain what each site is about and give some site details such as how many models they have and how many videos they have and how often they update, ect... If anyone has never heard of their sites before they aren't really going to be tempted to join any of the sites.

    My question is how do I know from which country someone is from when they view my site? As far as I understand I just have to not sure any adult content to anyone in the UK. I'm based in the UK.

    So if someone in Australia views any of my sites they should be able to see them as they currently are now with thumbnails of a sexual nature and nudity, ect... But if anyone in the UK views any of my sites they shouldn't be allowed to see anything of a sexual nature.

    I asked some of my members to look at the Wank it Now sites and they all see the same as me which is not much at all! And some are from the US and Canada and Japan and Germany, ect...

    So two questions: Do I have to block any adult content to all countries if they haven't been age verified. Or if it's just people in the UK I have to block adult content from until they have been verified how do I know which country they are from when they view one of my sites?

      You have to block UK visitors only (that's to satisfy Ofcom).

      To check visitor's geo, it depends on your stack (PHP, ...).

      You can ask your hosting provider. If you have Cloudflare it injects a header with a country code : CF-IPCountry

      UK country code is GB.

          Thanks. Some of my sites are just html so that might be a problem. I just don't understand why some sites like the Wank it Now sites are blocking all countries from seeing their preview videos and updates and model directory. Surely they would have the technical knowledge to just block UK surfers.

              Age verification is a complicated topic where no simple solution exists. I wish it did.

              At a minimum, I think you need some kind of legal representation to tell you exactly where you sit in regard to compliance. The same could be said for questions related to 2257s in the US, model releases, etc. I'm not a lawyer, and I don't think many of the posters here are lawyers either.

              None of the content you're showing appears to be blocked in the United States. So it seems they are doing some kind of geolocation work here. There are EU laws being discussed now, so maybe they're preemptively blocking locations they deem risky. Did you ask them?

              Geolocation is something you can integrate at the server level and also at the backend level. There are various services that perform this, some for a fee, others are free (and there is an inherent risk in inaccuracy.)

              Most of the systems that I have become familiar with that perform age verification as a service require a developer to integrate. Some software already has age verification integration as part of their system. How that works is up to them, and if you want something custom, generally you have to pay for it.

              It's a really messy time for age verification, because there is no official, international, fully vetted standard.

                  Interesting that for you the Wank it Now non-member pages still have content on like trailers. A few of the members of one of my sites are also in the US and they can't see the trailers or model menus now.

                  I have a few ideas to try and make things work once age verification laws kick in. I might ask our hosting company Mojo Host about it for advice.

                  I think most likely what we're going to do is just not have any adult images or videos on the non member pages. So just get rid of it for everyone no matter what country they live in. Then on the homepages of our sites we'll explain why this is but try to give a good description of what the sites are about.

                  We have a Preview Site that we are currently turning into a member site:

                  Previously it had video samples from our sites that anyone could see.

                  We will give all current and ex-members of our sites access to it. Also anyone can join for just $2.95 though we will have to verify their age when age verification laws come into effect. Members of the preview site will be able to see video samples and previews and will be able to see update pages for our sites and model menus. Because these will all be in the member section of the preview site age verification laws won't apply.

                          I can see previews & everything here in Spain.


                          Likewise with the MC sites, my site only displays the AV system for sites in the UK. I´ve spoke to the MC team & hopefully they´re going to create or allow site owners to create SFW tours, so the AVS would only need to trigger is purchasing the subscription

                              Hi Natalie, thanks for letting me know that. I don't know how Wank it Now are doing things as it's odd that a lot of members from my sites in different countries can't see the Wank it Now previews.

                              I'm just thinking along the lines of not having any previews for my sites. Just a page explaining about age verification. But I'll look into it more soon and your suggestions regarding what you're doing with your site.

                              It's just that a minor could click on the link where it says Have an account? Login.

                              Highly unlikely though but it is showing an adult sexual image to someone who might not actually be age verified.

                                              I use Yoti for age verification. Choose your countries, states, continents if you like. Put up a SFW page that is enticing, and the verification takes place post CC info. Use a decent VPN, to see what your competition is doing in Kentucky.
                                              Here is an example of what I do in the areas I choose. BTW, I use an English AVS company called Yoti. But there is choice of AVS companies out there.
