Isn't that the way it is supposed to be taken? If I read any book and only picked out the parts that sounded good and then changed it to fit modern views or what I thought, wouldn't it be a completely different book in the end?
"The Venomous Green Snake"
becomes
"The Happy and Friendly Cuddle Bears"
Why? Do you really want to give it so much more attention and assistance. Has never really helped any place it has been banned.
Besides why do you care what others think or believe?
It's everyone's problem that Christians take the Bible literally.
Actually most Christians do not. It is more the born again Christians, then some evangelicals. The farther you go from Catholic & Protestant the more fucked up the Christian typically gets.
Nice 2c, but why? No one seems to be able to show me the passage where God wrote "And to my followers I say unto thee.... these are more of general guidelines. So be choosy on what you want to believe I said and didn't and meant literally or otherwise. And this is all so."

Logic is fine, or not - but... why?
First go find the part that says god wrote it.
There are just a few things attributed to being dictated by god.

Religion has caused more bloodshed through the ages than anything else. It's all totally unnecessary. There is no god. People who think there is are stupid.

2 Timothy 3:16 states that ?All scripture is inspired by God?.? In 2 Peter 1:20-21, Peter reminds the reader to ?know this first of all, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one?s own interpretation, ? but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.? The Bible itself tells us that it is God who is the author of His book.

Religion is dangerous globally. The problem isn't usually people's 80 year old grandmothers believing in Jesus. It's the nutcases that act on behalf of their Gods. Remember, 9/11 was a faith-based initiative.
Religious people vote. They elect people who share their beliefs. Those elected officials pass laws that all of us will have to abide by regardless of faith (or lack thereof). Everyone should care what religion does to hold back a modern society.

Again so?
Much of the so called bloodshed attributed to religion is often nothing more than an excuse given by a greedy man or woman. Humans have always been pretty simple. We as a race often would take shit from people we felt could not hold onto their shit, just had to give your people a reason to risk their lives to take some of that shit. Wars would of happened either way with or without known religions. You just can not blame it simply on religion.
Religion also served as a guide early on to assist in keeping people both in line with the concept of laws and most often the power of the greedy guy in charge, plus aspects that helped them give reason to why shit should not be done. One thing to tell a hungry person not to eat a pig, something else to tell that same hungry person that its against gods rules to eat it. They did not have the understanding why, but it did its job.
What I find more interesting is the religions before Christianity got its foothold. Pretty damn much the same concepts, just better stories and well entertaining.

Go ahead and bring up 9/11. Keep in mind if you take what is known about it with truth, then you would also be under the assumption that Bin Laden carried it off through some other people. He is not uneducated and he understands what the Koran really does say. He himself would know that what he was doing was not inline with gods commands. He can use it as an excuse to get uneducated people to do his bidding. I just will not accept that if someone does something under the name of religion when it goes against the very religious beliefs that religion holds dear, then it is the acts of that person and not the religion itself.

I recently moved from Kansas - a state which is forbidden by state law to teach evolution - to North Carolina which is in the heart of the bible belt. I thought Kansas religious nuts were scary. You don't know the meaning of scary until you hear some inbred momo with a southern accent preaching fire and brimstone in the Wal-Mart parking lot.
Kansas bible thumpers are certainly not usually evangelical or radical but they have done far more damage than the deranged evangelicals we have in North Carolina.
Religious fanaticism is dangerous because these people believe 100% of what the bible tells them. There is zero common sense involved. If you believe and live your life by what the bible tells you, I feel that you have a mental affliction. People who recognize the bible as a nice collection of fictional writing (like Mother Goose) aren't dangerous.
Your primary religion before Christianity was the Greek Mytho's in the prime area's of the world (middle east, Mediterranean), includes Zeus, his peeps, and such. Your Nordic myths to the north had their basis going on at the same time with your tree of life and middle earth type idea's - yes that includes Thor and such. The Orient mytho's were again more along the lines of ghosts, dragons, spirits, and forces.

Your issue then should be with lack of education, not religion.
Rarely will you find fanatics that are educated unless they are taking advantage of others.
Scripture is there for interpretation, not to be taken literally. Why do you think there are so many different Christian religions, catholics, protestants, and all their subsects, baptists, methodists, anglican, united, etc etc, few of whom can agree on what anything truly means in the bible.
What I find funny is people in our industry publicly vilifying those who hold some spiritual belief, saying they are the cause of most wars in history, religion should be banned! Throwing ridicule and hatred at those who don't think or believe as they do. Sound familiar?
If you're so enlightened on "God" then shouldn't you instead choose to lead by example? As it stands hard-line christians are intollerant of anyone who doesn't believe, and you hardline athiests are just as intollerant towards those who do. "Christfags"? Please. Doesn't the world have enough ignorance and intollerance in it? Maybe we should feel lucky we live in a country where people are allowed to freely choose to believe in whatever they want.
Remember, believing there is no God is still a belief.
Timothy 2:12
I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent.
Sup wif dat?
Sorry to be the bearer of anti-lulz.
What's up with the 100's of civilizations that have also set moral codes surrounding the inferiority of Females? You will find that 90% of cultures have the same belief system; even in today's world women are paid less than men, 'sup wif dat'?
Let me guess, you're an Atheist? I guess you hide behind the simple words of 'evolution' whenever a Christian gets into a debate with you? Hopefully this is the case as I plan to prove your idiocy in front of the entire forum. If you had any understanding of the theory of evolution you would know that what the bible says about women is certainly one of the least malicious things you could pick out to proclaim your brilliance.
Throughout the history of existence and in virtually every species that exist, females have never had to compete for their seed to be spread, it has always been left for the males to contend and prove they are worthy of passing on their DNA. The key aspect of Darwinian evolution is the notion that those who are superior have their genes passed on, as the males of every species have always been the contenders, one would deduce that on the grand scale of millions of years, males in a populous are much more likely to be 'superior' than the female counterpart. This superiority is in all aspects that directly relate to passing on the seed of your person, for instance strength, endurance, logic, etc.

We may also infer, from the law of the deviation from averages, so well illustrated by Mr. Galton, in his work on Hereditary Genius that the average of mental power in man must be above that of women
Before you pull the old chestnut of homosexuality, disobedient children, talking snakes or whatever you can throw at me to prove Christianity is ludicrous, save it. I myself am an Atheist yet have a real passion to shut those up that fight for a cause they have no understanding of.
Remember, believing there is no God is still a belief.
Which is why I am Agnostic and not an Atheist.
Just odd that I often turn up in some of these talks and end up on the side of the religious. Though I am far from it.

Islam is one of the most violent and repressive religions on earth. It's right up there with Christianity. The Koran does encourage violence in no uncertain terms.

I know lots of uneducated atheists. Even without education they are harmless.
I know lots of uneducated atheists. Even without education they are harmless.
Why?
Because they do not have religion so they can not be convinced to do some fucking stupid shit? They can not just decide to go on a murder spree or rob some banks?
Remember, believing there is no God is still a belief.
Well, no. That's an illogical way of putting it.
An example I can give; let me say to you that there is a teapot which orbits mars, it's around the size of our house and it has always been there. A disbelief in what I'm saying means nothing, as the very notion of what I'm saying is not logical. Just because one can not disprove my statement does not mean that both options have an equal chance of occurrence. Not believing in God is not a belief per se, it is simply the denial of a suggested hypothesis based on the lack of evidence to support it.
EDIT: My 69th post and it's not in the least bit sex related, considering the reason for communing in this forum, I find this amusing.

Let me guess... Read Dawkins much? Perhaps Bertrand?

Sure, they just have one less thing to blame it on. At least you'll never hear them say "God told me to do it."

But they might still blame it on the voices in their head
Crazy is crazy no matter what label you put on it.

In arguments relating to religion, there are 2 different kinds of hacks...
Hack #1 believes that the bible is the true word of god and condemns anyone that doesn't believe it, and of course gives you the usual "if you do ::insert sinful activity here::, or don't believe in god/Jesus/etc. you are going to hell" argument.
Hack #2 believes the bible is a fairy tale, and goes to any length to let the believers know that. They give you the usual "invisible man in the clouds" argument, and call anyone that believes in the bible a sheep.
I think we need more of a new hack, hack #3, that may or may not believe the bible is real, but they don't give a rat's ass what anyone else believes. For those of you that are slow, hack #3 may believe the bible is the true world of god, or he may believe it is bullshit, but he keeps it to himself either way, because forcing his opinion on others is the true bullshit.
For a very long time I was hack #2, but then I realized if believing in religion gets you through the day, and you keep it to your fucking self, then more power to you...

If only hack #1 didn't impose his/her beliefs on all of the other hacks then your philosophy would work. Hack #2 exists because hack #1 can't keep his fucking yap shut and stop passing legislation that tells all of the other hacks how to live their lives.

Let's be completely honest here, hack #2 would still exist even if hack #1 kept their beliefs to themselves. If someone believes in something then there will always be another person to tell them they are an idiot, a sheep, delusional, etc. Hack #2 is just way more vocal because hack #1 can't keep their opinions to themselves.
Either way, I'm fucking sick of both of them. If you believe in god I don't think you are a bad person, so long as you don't judge me because I don't believe. You can tell me you believe in the Great Pumpkin, and as long as you don't try and shove it down my throat I won't give you shit. When you are brought up in a certain religion it is damn hard to change your views, because it is all you know...
