man, go see them if you haven't yet. they look beyond fucking good. like mindbogglingly unbelievable sexy picture. i went in to buy a new plasma a couple weeks ago, and was like a deer in the headlights when i walked by the big 52" samsung led. the pixel dimming and true blacks are just incredible, especially displayed a high quality video like a bluray or such. that fucking tv will make you jizz in your pants. expensive, but hey, if you got $5000 to burn. this is a good way to do it....

i got a 55" Samsung series 8 the other day. insanity. I had been watching things on older series 6 LCDs, difference is very very evident on HD content and regular.

I'm buying one for sure when I finally go home. Right now I have a 50inch plasma but since no one lives in my house no point dropping $4000 for one... when I'm back living there tho first thing I'm buying is an LED tv.

In my opinion these TV's are the best value out there right now, the 52" 7 Series Samsung, which is very similar to the 8 Series, is currently available on amazon for like 1300 bucks, which is an absolute STEAL. Right before I left retail about a year ago, the same TV was selling for double that. The LED's are sick, but just like any other new technology, a bit pricey right now. Pick up a 6, 7, or 8 Series Samsung and you'll still be amazed by the picture quality.

Plasma is the best price/value combo right now, they are super cheap, yet the quality is amazing. LCD is still shit, so anyone who replaces their LCD with plasma will see a big difference. LEDs are great, but the price isn't right yet and the difference to plasmas isn't really that big. At least I don't see it.

I have a 3 or 4 year old Plasma TV which I love, that was, until I saw an LED TV yesterday. Just amazing.

People forget that BLACK is a color too, and LED TV's do the black color perfectly.

I won't be buying one this year but probably next summer.

I have two 48 inch plasmas from toshiba. they do the job. Im broke anyway and cant even afford food barely so leds will wait. Fyi plasma tvs are on their way out, go into anystore and you will see everything is lcd. i never went with lcd because of the tilt angles i hear you can experience and my couch isnt in front of the tv do to the house layout so i went with plasma. Do the led's give off heat? do they have energy star becasue i hear lcds are very energy efficient as opposed to plasma. The led light i read are as thin as a credit card and because they are backlit it makes a huge difference in how they work. to much new technology going on right now to keep up. even blu-ray will be obsolete in 2 years. disney is already working on something

                                    light emmiting diode

                                    not liquid crystal display (lc)

                                    not plasma (plasma)

it will be interesting to see how they break eg. will one diode go out or will it be a whole square block.

This is completely incorrect. LED refers to the back-lighting the screen uses, not the method for displaying the picture. LED's shine trough an LCD display, instead of CCFL backlighting shining through an LCD.

                                        BOTH are LCD televisions.

glad you cleared that up, I thought there was a huge shift in technology being used that I missed noticing... guess it's not so much of a huge shift then

apparently it is still a lcd however

                                                1. Dynamic RGB LEDs mean better blacks......not that i dont like blacks as they are now. Its always good to have a better black.

                                                2. Edge-LED. goes around the frame and is spread across the back

                                                the two types.

The new led save 40% more power then the current lcds.

                                                3. I am pretty sure there is actually development that i read in P.m. about a new led technology that will be as thin as a credit card and will give a great crisp picture. Unless i read that article wrong but did find this article on a google search.

The smaller end of the screen size spectrum will soon belong to organic LED (OLED). OLED needs no backlighting because the pixel grid itself is an array of colored lights. Such "active-matrix" OLED displays are also brighter than active-matrix LCD technology. OLED screens have every other screen technology beat in the contrast and brightness departments and they're also thinner. Sony's 11-inch XEL-1 is currently the only commercially available OLED TV, and it boasts a thickness of 3 millimeters. LG has announced a 15-inch OLED TV that will be a scant 0.85 millimeters thick, which will launch Korea at the end of this year.

and the more kick ass part of that article is here

Once credit loosens up and those fabs come online, OLED will finally be able to break out of its small-screen niche. Ultimately, OLED has potential applications far beyond HDTV. OLED displays can be printed on a flexible plastic substrate, and foldable screens with the thickness of a credit card have already been demonstrated at CES 2009. Clear OLED screens will also eventually be possible, so that a window in your house could double as a TV screen.

Backlit is better however samsung says they compensate somehow. Up for everyone to decide if that is true however the one big advantage of samsungs sidelit is that the thing is no thicker than a notebook laptop practically

I've seen both, and I own the Samsung... and I don't think the LG looks anywhere near as good as the Samsung. The LG struck me as being merely average picture quality. Nothing special.

The TRUE black is achieved not by displaying a TRUE black, but by actually dimming or turning off the entire black pixel as opposed to actually displaying a black color. If you haven't seen one with your own eyes, you just can't understand what a huge difference the blacks make in the contrast and display of the picture. It really is something else.

I'm really interested in seeing the local-dimming 8500 model. $3599 is quite steep, though. We got ours for around $2400 and can't imagine being more satisfied with the picture quality.

The one thing I somewhat regret is not waiting for the price to drop, so we could pick up the 55" without breaking the bank. Now the 55" 6000 is $2570.

I think the bigger size would make a big difference.

It's just backlit with LEDs, the LC pixels still shutter to stop light so it is not a true black.

An LED will give a richer color gamut, that is what you are seeing, they are also the latest generation LCD, so they are a bit better because of that as well. CFL is the shittiest form of light available and that has been in LCD TVs up until this point.

I saw a 52 or 55 inch at Sears and was blown away by the quality of the image, just amazing. I think the price was around $2800.00 but then i saw the same TV on Amazon for way less delivered ? They also had a cosmetically damaged one for $1300 ( scratch on surrounding plastic case )
