    Recommendation from GFY photographers please

I have a Canon Rebel. I have the stock lens and a zoom lens. The problem is that when I have the zoom lens on I often with I had the stock lens on, and of course, when the stock lens is on I am wishing I had the zoom on.

Any recommendation for a lens that does both?

I think I am understanding you correctly.

If you have the standard lens on and can't achieve the zoom capability you wish, simply use your legs to compensate for the zoom...another wards just move in and out (closer/further) to your subject to get the desired zoom.

I hope that is what you are referring to?

          God dammit Nicki!

          Brilliant!

Still, I know BD is wanting something to compensate that issue without moving. I believe he WANTS to rely on the lens doing the work.

          Thats just how BD rolls...

I'm thinking he's wanting to take pics of objects farther away. Of course for shooting porn we just move in and out. But I think Bad Dog might be taking pics of scenery, at least that's what I have seen from some of the outdoor stuff he has shot on some of his rides along the California coastline.

Not exactly. They say a picture is as good as a 1,000 words, so let's see if I can do it that way.

              Normal lens

After running to car to get zoom lens

              Then back to normal

If I had one lens that did both I would be able to zoom on demand and wide on demand without the hassle of changing lenses.

              Understand?

                Precisely.

If stepping back or forward a few feet was all it took I would have figured that out.

sounds more like you need a camera satchel so you can easily switch out. If you have it there on your shoulder (no its not a fuckin purse) you can just disconnect and attach your other in seconds.

I would never change lenses outside like that. Too much risk of dirt/dust/bugs getting inside (happened to goodgirl, so I learned from her mistake).

Thanks, I thought it was cool too, however, if I had the zoom on it would have been totally bad ass.

Well... lemme give you the advice Aaron gave me...

                            http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...Autofocus.html

Not sure if its overdoing it on a rebel. But I was told this lens will do for just about anything, up close, far away... Great for DOF shots.

Baddog ..... Before digital, camera bodies were basically free compared to good lenses. For this reason I had 4-5 Canon bodies each with a different lens. When shooting I never had to worry about dirt/dust because I seldom changed lenses ......

Anyway, I still have $15,000 plus in the best Canon lenses (went with Nikon digital) in storage in Lexington, Ky. I'll be up there around Christmas and will be happy to let you use/test them if you wish. I'll even pay UPS because you're such a sweet guy .......

I've changed lenses outdoors in a number of situations including standing in a river in the pouring down rain. The key is to take your time and BE CAREFUL.

                                          That being said.....

Knowing what you are shooting I would suggest you consider this as an option:

                                          http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...50_f_3_5_.html

I could show you additional options offered by Canon with faster lenses but you don't really need them for what you are doing and they come with a stiffer price tag.

                                            That being said.....

Knowing what you are shooting I would suggest you consider this as an option:

I could show you additional options offered by Canon with faster lenses but you don't really need them for what you are doing and they come with a stiffer price tag.
Thank you! That is what we were looking for and I heard Sigma was pretty good.

Yeah, I used to sell a lot of Sigma lenses back in the day. Here's a similar lens but better quality glass and a bit faster.

                                                  Hi Baddog,

The best thing for you to do would be to go to your favorite camera shop, and tell them that you want a general purpose lens that gives you typical 35mm AND the zoom power that you want.

I have a DX80 and the lens that came with it suits me well (25mm-300). What I wish I had though was a "Faster" lens so that I could take better night time pictures. A faster lens will let in more light and hopefully reduce the "noise" I get now. I would love to take pictures of a sky full of stars with the shutter speed set to 1hr and produce a clear image.

                                                  Good luck!

Interesting issue. Stock lenses are always going to suck, especially at the far end, as you can see.

The linked 70-200 is a great lens - L (professional) series, etc - but probably overkill for what you need. It's going to be too heavy, for a start, you probably don't need F2.8, and you probably don't need the image stabiliser.

It comes in a F4 version, no IS - it's a lot cheaper, a lot lighter, and the quality is great - I just one one myself. Problem is, on your rebel, you have the 1.6 multiplication factor, so it'll be a 112 - 320 - great for zoom, terrible for close.

For your case, I'd probably recommend the 24-105 (will be 38 - 168 on your body).
It's an L series lens, meaning it's built well, lens quality and picture quality is good across all the range, it has image stabilisation, and will do a great trick of briding the wide to zoom gap. It's f4, so nicely responsive, also.

Head to a camera shop and try one out - but for what you're looking for, I think this would probably fit the bill.

Then make one of 'em a point 'n shoot like the Canon S10 IS with its 35 mm equiv 28-560mm lens. Got to have the DSLR quality - I like the specs vs $ on the new 7D by Canon. Get the body and take Aaron's suggestion on the Sigma or expensive Canon zoom.

The issue of an all-in-one lens issue aside, it looks like your AF is off, or both your lenses are front (or back, hard to tell) focussing... dunno wtf is happening in that first shot, but on the zoom lens, no part of the deer is in focus.

Is f5.6 wide open at that focal length for your lens? Could explain the blur if so, but why ISO 1600 at midday???

Personally, I don't see any problem changing lenses in the field - A good technique where one lens goes on the second one comes is good enough. Well, I've never had probs, and I much prefer that swapping between my 17-55 and 70-210 as I really love those optics, that I doubt exist in a full-range zoom.

nikon makes a 24-200 vr (similar to is), great great all purpose lens, surely canon makes something similar?
and yes i am guessing he will need IS; handshooting at 200mm, doesnt take much shaking to blur the shot.
