Haven't worked in mobile since '07. I'm sure it's all different. What I experienced then was that most of the money went to the SMS aggregator, the carrier, and the company providing the mobile solution for "one's" needs. So if you're not one of the three mentioned, or some other middle-man, I'd do some research and due diligence, even if you're not doing SMS / MMS, and just want a mobile website model.
it's very worth it. Prior to working for Top Bucks I kind of laughed at the whole mobile thing, but now I've seen the results and they are amazing so I'm not laughing anymore.. The mobile market will grow big so if the amount of $ being made right now is big I can just imagine what it will be like in the next year. So yes, I would highly recommend that you get into mobile. This way you can monetize your regular traffic and any mobile traffic that you get.
I focus the majority of my time on mobile related things.

Here's a stupid analogy regarding mobile:
If you're a website owner with content and want to go mobile, you're searching for gold. Which means you'll need to buy picks, shovels, mine-site contracts, etc, from the various suppliers who can help you with the tools you need.
I have no doubt there's money made in adult mobile. Just depends on your business plan and where you stand in the chain of things.
this might be a simplistic question, but isn't it a simple matter of just making a small effort to make existing sites mobile friendly rather than making a big deal out of it and trying to specialize?

Yes.
Last I read, one of the hang up for some mobile was the flash video.
I guess flash is not supported in mobile in the OS, and either they were working on it, or something brand new and untested had come out for flash on mobile phones. I recall reading it in one of the trades, and it has been discussed elsewhere as well. Run a search.
