Those are the killed ones I mentioned.
On the other hand, attenuated viruses can cause the disease:

Killed/inactive viral particles cannot cause the disease, but attenuated viral particles can - although it's quite rare, and the disease is typically less severe when it does happen.
Now, in the case of the flu vaccine, both variants are used. Killed virus for the shot, attenuated virus for the nasal spray:

What is the "big scare" you keep referring to. There are already more people currently infected with H1N1 then there have been during the peak of the regular flu which past history shows is in January...and this is only October. If there is any "big scare" it is already upon us.

I will try again...there is a very real shortage of the vaccine...states are only getting a fraction of what they need and what they are getting is going to the most at risk. I am satisfied that when it becomes available to them the Obama children will have the shot. In the local schools one out of every five students and teachers is out with the H1N1 flu. I entered the gifted program around grade 5 after a parent teacher conference. I was constantly bored in school and the teacher thought it was cause I didn't want to learn. My parents knew otherwise and pushed for finding out why. I was given an IQ test and I believe in 5th grade scored a 135 or so, it increased some as I got older, and I had a high score of 144, but my average score ended up around 142 out of the last 3 tests I took that were individually issued.. Once you are in the gifted program we usually took a new IQ test every few years.

Nobody is claiming that the swine flu is likely to mutate into something similar to the 1918 flu. There's just a small chance that it happens, but that small chance needs to be taken seriously since if it would happen, it would have huge effects.
It's like putting on your seatbelt when you go for a drive. Will you crash? Probably not. And yet, if you just drive enough, chances are that you will eventually be involved in a crash.
A similar thing is the case with potential pandemics. Most will turn out to be relatively harmless, killing only a few thousand people. But we know for a fact that every once in a while, one turns up that kills millions. That's something countries should prepare for, just like they should prepare for natural disasters, terrorist attacks, environmental disasters, etc.
The "big scares", however, aren't a part of that preparation. Rather, they're asinine media hypes - because the media profit from hypes, as evidenced by the case which started this thread.
One thing to keep in mind, however, is that this year's swine flu has already killed thousands of people - including hundreds of children. In the US alone, a few dozen completely healthy children have been killed by the swine flu. Meanwhile, morons like you pounce on idiotic news stories of cases where a flu vaccine is quite unlikely to be the cause of disease.
Here's a thought: stop being scared, and try to be rational instead? Look at the numbers, realize that personal risks are small either way, and see that of the two small risks, the flu is by far the larger one?/(bb|[^b]{2})/Comment

Well, I will simply note that nothing this terrible happened in her life until she got a flu shot.Quite interesting, I looked up a bit more about this case, and there are several noteworthy things - if you ignore the "diagnoses" offered by the reporters, at least.
First thing to note: it's suggested that she got the flu from the flu shot. However, the flu shot causing the flu is impossible. Unlike some other vaccines (including the nasal spray flu vaccine), the flu shot contains killed instead of merely attenuated viral particles. Those trigger an immune response which can cause some mild flu-like symptoms for a day or two, but they cannot cause the flu. Ever.
Second thing to note: she says she came down with the flu ten days after the flu shot. Any flu-like symptoms caused by the flu shot would have occurred much, much sooner, since the body reacts quite quickly to what it identifies as pathogens. So whatever the cause of her symptoms, the flu shot is an exceedingly unlikely suspect.
Third thing to note: her symptoms are atypical for dystonia, and she's actually being used as an example of psychogenic dystonia by neurologists teaching residents.
On the bright side, psychogenic dystonia can actually be treated. So she has a chance of making a full recovery

Downplaying herd immunity? Herd immunity is *extremely* important when it comes to many other diseases that are vaccinated against. Not getting your children the MMR vaccine, the DTP vaccine, etc. is extremely irresponsible, since it endangers not just your children, but other people and society as a whole as well.
With the flu, however, the problem is that it spreads and mutates too quickly to make it possible to achieve herd immunity. By the time you have an effective vaccine, there already are tons of outbreaks. By the time you've vaccinated enough of the population to get within reach of herd immunity, a new strain of the flu is already rearing its head.
So with the flu, the primary goal isn't achieving herd immunity - the middle of an epidemic is quite a bit too late to start thinking of that. Rather, the primary goal is protecting those most at risk.
That means that vaccinating people with weakened immune systems, people working with patients who have weakened immune systems, and people most likely to come into contact with the virus is the priority. After that, mass vaccinations can be used to slow the spread of the epidemic and decrease damage among the population as a whole - especially in case a strain mutates into something more devastating.
With viruses that don't mutate or spread as quickly, on the other hand, both herd immunity and individual prevention are primary goals. Herd immunity is the reason smallpox is now forever gone, and the reason that there's a good chance of eradicating polio in the reasonably near future.

Some out of order crap I wish to post.
1. Aside from yes it is a pandemic by definition, it also has a questionable stability so it can also mutate quickly yet thankfully it has not. However it is a virus that has crossed species which makes it an additional threat.
2. In school IQ testing is BS. Hell Penn & Teller should do a show on it. I had the in school IQ tests. I scored real low at first (random answers by me, which landed me in special ed. Even though they told me the test did not matter). Second test I took seriously and it placed me in the high IQ gifted arena. They wanted to talk skipping grades, special advance classes and all that shit. I complained and eventually got what I want which was normal classes.
Fast Forward a few years. I get into my medical malpractice lawsuit. Lawyers from both sides need to discover my future income potential and many other factors at the ripe age of 12-13. This testing took 2-3 days at around 4 to 6 hours each day. The results were much different than what the schools ever said. I will just leave it at that and say unless people have done that type of brain testing, IQ tests are bullshit.
3. In most places nobody can even get the damn h1n1 shot, spray, or whatever. They just are not available. I do mean nobody too, even places full of chemo patients who could kick it by catching a common cold.Comment
