That said, it sounds like you only know him as a rapper. And while Biggie's death definitely gave his rap career it's initial boost, Diddy was already an A&R exec for an influential hip hop and R&B label when he signed Biggie.
Before he was fired from that label, he had help launch Craig Mack and Mary J Blige's careers. He then started his own label and launched many more careers including Biggie's. Diddy's first single came two years after Biggie's "Ready to Die" was released.
That MC Lyte & Missy track you say he offered nothing more than a shitty ass one line? He produced that track. Without his production, that track probably doesn't go platinum. Biggie's "lacky" helped produce Juicy and directed the music video. The chorus is sung by Total, and guess who gave them their start... The same "side man" who produced Hypnotize (who's chorus was sung by a member of Total).
You say you didn't hear of him until 98 (which would be surprising since he had already hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 twice by then)? You wouldn't have heard of Biggie, Mase, Total, 112 or Faith Evans before then if it wasn't for him. Biggie's lyrics are iconic. But Biggie's music? Some of it was produced by Diddy. Without Diddy, we may never have heard of Biggie.
Again, fuck Diddy. Fuck him hard. But at least recognize that he did more than drop a few one liners.

Diddy was a pioneer in terms of hip hop, rap and overall entrepeneurship. I never met him but knew many who did back in the day (nineties).
But hey OJ was a fantastic NFL player and okay actor.
R. Kelly was a talented singer and rapper.
Michael Jackson was a brilliant singer, writer and dancer.
In the end, while I acknowledge all of these fantastic performers and business people, in the end they tarnished their own legacy by not getting their demons under control.
(I can name PLENTY of white performers, athletes, actors etc who fucked up their brilliant careers too by acting like maniacs.)
