I might disagree with this a little. For sure it seems like the current generation that is age 15-25ish seems more entitled then most, but I think those who really were entitled and spoiled were not working before so they wouldn't be out of work now.
I think a lot of this has to do with the down economy. Most teenage/high school kids work (at least where I live) in grocery stores stocking shelves, cleaning up and carrying out groceries or they work in fast food places or pumping gas in gas stations and things like that. They work low wage jobs that they can work on evenings and weekends. In high school I worked at a small store and all of my friends had similar jobs. But with the economy in the crapper I think there are more and more older people now taking those jobs than ever before because they are out of work and need something so they go to work at McDonalds or Taco Bell or the local gas station so they can get some money while they look for a better job.
If you run a McDonalds and need some extra help who are you going to hire: one guy who can work any hours you want and will put in the 40+ you need on any shift or a couple of teenagers who are still in high school and combined can only work about 15-20 hours a week and have shift restrictions due to school and their age?Comment

The problem though is it is almost impossible these days to get a bachelors degree with out racking up some pretty big debt in the process. There are ways to do it if you are from a lower income family or are going into a field where you can get some grants/scholarships, but for most people the only real option is student loans.Comment

The UK rates have a lot to do with ease of benefits rather than graduates unable to get work. Certainly that problem exists too but for every 16-24 year old out of work because they have graduated and can't find work, I am suer there are another 5 that just don't even try because they get benefits. Heck, sometimes I wonder why I work.Comment

In my last office job(8 years), a large majority of the employees were in the 20 -25 range. I can easily say that they were the most useless, lazy, entitled bunch of punks I've ever encountered.
They all want to advance as soon as they arrive, and think they are God's gift to everything because parents of the last 20 years have been raising their sons and daughter to believe they're special little princes and princesses, and deserve everything in world because they are breathing. I sound like an old man, but this is what I saw, and it scares me for the future of the country.

Yep. Same here.
When I had started at the phone company out of college. I was in the first class of new hires in more than a decade. Most of the people there were lifers, and oldies.
Over time, they had started a mass hiring spree bringing in, literally, 150-200 new people into the office over 18-24 months. By this time, I was a union steward. So I would get to sit in on a lot of the firings, and have to file grievances for all these people. It was fucking crazy.
Now keep in mind, this was almost 8+ years ago now. But even then, they were some of the worst. Worst attitudes of entitlement, work ethic, and whiners ever. It was simply insane.
Keep in mind, where I live. There are not a ton of $50,000.00-75,000.00 top craft jobs in this area. So getting fired from some job you are going to top out in 5 years (if you start at bottom, no college, no experience) and make a good living with no comparable job is nuts. But there were plenty who did not care.
Not just the straight out of college idiots. But those single mothers, and others with families. That was the part that surprised me most. People with families, and mouths to feed to just did not give a flying fuck.
