    is Cogent really that bad?

    are they?

do a search on any board and you'd think they deliver packets by hot air ballon ... but they're cheap, yeah i know they're cheap. but should i go with a host using them, along with 'some' sort of backup circuit

bottom line, do you trust your business to Cogent?

You need a host that serves from multiple providers...

                Right?

those aren't Cogent prices...those are Verio prices, lol.

Cogent is FINE. No one has ever really had a problem with Cogent (just maybe their provider who peers with them).

                      Cogent rocks.

well anything is better than cogent but then each provider is better than another one for different reasons.

L3/Williams/Verio are good more reliable alternatives.

                          That idiocy speaks for itself.

wtf is that? you mean, if you have a cogent circuit and every one of your users is riding on a cogent pipe all is well. but if anyone using your site comes from say, att, sprint, wcom, qwest, aol, msn, they are fucked?

Cogent is okay and their uptime is really good. Had a 100mb/s line for 10 months, and I don't remember any downtime caused by Cogent.

From Montreal, I get better pings on Cogent than on Level3, but outside Canada/Usa, Cogent sucks.

Use it for TGP galleries, free movie hosting... not for a TGP or paysite or any other important thing.

cogent's uptime is fine. I don't believe they actually had physicall downtime, however, their reponse and routing is horrible. They route a packet all over the country trying to get it to the destination through their network without using expensive peer bandwidth. This causes increased latency/lag.

Uptime isnt a problem, its their peering and routing that is utter shit. But for the price you cant really complain....
