We didn't get much in the way of mineral rights when my dad and his brothers bought the farmland. And with drilling in CA on the way out it's not an issue, plus the oil under it is too deep to be economical to drill. My sisters and I sold the 320 acres that was our share a couple years ago, we still have the 32 acres of development land my dad bought in the 70's but only a few percent of the mineral rights to it.
Funny thing is my home, which is been in my family since it was built in the 50's by my grandparents, everybody in my neighborhood gets a small oil royalty every year from the wells drilled just outside of town, so we do own the oil rights under our houses.
