    UK Govt Wants To Increase Tax Over 50%

    Already the top tier means you pay 62% of your income to the government (50% income tax plus 12% national insurance).

    Now theyre planning another rise of about 30% from one of the tiers. I dont know this will work but im sure it will mean that youre working for the government no matter what you do.

                  I knew even before I read the thread, by looking at the title, that it would be sourced from the Daily Mail.

                  Don't believe everything you read, especially from that paper. It's bigoted, xenophobic, racist, sexist, homophobic, alarmist, reactionary, and generally lacks any news at all.

                                                      People like to exagerate. It's like when neo-cons brought up how in the 1960's the US had a tax rate as 90%. Making it sound as if some "poor" millionaire was paying 90% of his income in taxes. Um no the 90% tax rate only applied to income over $5 million. Which would be about $25-$30 mil in today's dollars. The number of people that made over $5 milion a year back then was around 1000.

                                                                  You're right but a new top tier tax rate comes in from April 2010, which is 50%. Add to that national insurance at 12% and higher earners will be paying 62% to the government:

                                                                  However, now the government has realised its not enough (mainly because rich tend to get around them) and thus new measures are being considered that will probably aim a broader section of the population.

                                                                  Both of these measures are not taking into account VAT which is also set to increase!!

                                                                      I have a about 67% tax on income (40ish incometax + 25% salestax). If I made 21k more a year, I would hit the taxroof of 68% as well
