    So I set off the metal detector at the airport...

    I have steel caps in my boots, so I had to go through barefoot... beep beep beep again

    So I had to take off my belt, and walk through barefoot holding up my trousers with one hand

    That was embarassing enough, but it got me thinking... what happens when you have non removable body jewellery? Anyone here got a dick full of metal?

          Piercings don't usually set them off. I don't have that many I guess but that's what they always tell me.

                      First time flying? Have had that done everytime we fly.

                      Sometimes I think they fuck with us girls more! They go further than that asking us to take off more, helps having a male with you though.

In Australia things don't seem to be quite so paranoid, but I did still get told off for taking a pic "too close" to the security checking area. Initially the guy there ordered me to delete it (which I'm not even sure they're permitted to do?) but then I showed him that the pic framed 4 chairs, a wall, and my daughter. He let me keep it.

                                              Taking your shoes off has been standard since 9/11. And I've always had to take my belt off, well at least I can't remember the last time I owned a belt that didn't have enough metal in it to set them off.

                                                  I live in Australia, so what happened to me is a little unusual. There's no requirement to remove anything unless you set off the detector.

                                                              Body jewelery generally does not set off the detector, at least the bars in my nipples don't.

                                                              Also my wedding ring is a heavy chunk of tungsten, and I've never had to take it off walking through.

                                                                              Flying last Sunday, got behind a woman in line for the security station, she's wearing metal bracelets, necklaces, heavy rings, etc..

                                                                              She tries to walk through wearing all that crap. of course the scanner beeps like crazy. She looks confused, walks back out, takes off her shoes, and tries to go back through.

                                                                              What is wrong with people?

                                                                              I talked to her later in the VIP lounge. She travels all the time. I didn't ask, but I wonder if this doesn't happen to her every single time she flies..

                                                                                      Basically, the detector is an inductive loop that is pulsing at a certain frequency, creating a weak alternating magnetic field. This, in turn, creates eddy currents on the surface of conductive materials (which usually are metals) which changes the inductance of the loop. This change causes the frequency of the loop to change, which can be detected.

                                                                                      This sounds complicated, but the electronics behind it is really simple, basically it is just a resonant feedback loop.
                                                                                      Any metal has the potential to trip a metal detector.

                                                                                          a funny thing, i was coming back from s.e. asia this May, and my cousin and i both had two bottles of sangsom rum in our backpacks. forgot we had them, and we made it through both thailand and japan (our connecting flight) without being stopped lol. have a tube of toothpaste too large, or some listerine, instant search lol.

                                                                                                  the whole airport security is a joke anyways. You can hijack an airplane with a pencil the way it currently is, or take your food tray into the bathroom and make a shank.

                                                                                                  The solution is so simple its silly. No door from cabin to cockpit, no communication from cabin to cockpit. problem solved.. Can't hijack an airliner if the captain has no idea they have been hijacked

If I am wearing earrings that aren't gold it will beep. I set it off a couple of weeks ago in Amsterdam and I had nothing on me that should have set it off so they had a female officer pat me down and when I say pat me down...she didn't miss an inch. I was wearing an underwire bra (they don't set off alarms) and she even put her hands up under the underwire bra to make sure there was nothing in the bra. First time they went to that far lol.

                                                                                                                                              I swear there has never been a time when my Dad hasn't set them off. He always manages to have something in his pocket that sets them off and then has to unload everything while the rest of us wait.
