Depends what you want or where you want to be close to.
The Malmaison is really good and from what I remember is just down the street from Fabric Nightclub. Had a couple friends stay there and the rooms where nice.
Somewhere like the Strand Palace is fairly cheap and is as central as you can possibly get or the Savoy which is over the road but you'll need some of that Playboy money for there

I recommend St. Martins Lane in the West End if you like Modern. Service is great, its very cool and in a good location with great nightlife.

During my last stay in London, I thoroughly enjoyed the Montague Hotel.
It's close by the magnificent British Museum, the nightlife of Soho, and is a major transportation hub. The Blue Door Bistro located within the hotel serves good food as well.

I recommend the Mandarin Oriental Hydepark. It´s located near the Hyde Park - well, the name implies it - and in London´s best shopping area. There is a direct underground connection to Heathrow airport. You can take the taxi, of course. But don´t forget to tell the taxi driver that you aren´t a tourist... And you´ll have a great view over Hyde Park.
And it´s very "British".

I used to be a travel agent. There really aren't that many that actually get sent to check out hotels any longer. If you have been there then you went on your own back. What you do have, is the big book that gives honest hotel reviews, which most non-agents will never see. It is a great book because it will give you real information and tell you what is wrong with the property too. That said, as I said in the other London hotel thread this week, London does not do hotel rooms well. We have great city which is very much let down by the hotels. They are either off the planet expensive and then amazing or crap and over priced. There are very few middle ground type places like the chains. It is going to really be highlighted for the Olympics when far too many tourists end up at the really horrid inner city b&bs which still exist because that is all they can afford.Comment

Ditto. It was a shithole not worthy of SPG brand.
Eric go to www.lastminute.co.uk then find the link to "top secret hotels" sort by 5* and then choose. Prices are about half rack rate or even cheaper, hotels are the main ones offloading rooms they haven't sold.
Good thing is you know you'll be in a 5* and you'll be somewhere you hadn't planned on being in terms of location.
As soon as you book they tell you the hotel details.
I use this service all the time.
Generally the standard of hotels in London is lower than you would expect.
