regarding the dogs, yeah they are everywhere, even on the islands. cats too, jesus there are a lot of cats. we had a pack of dogs following us once on koh tao, they didn't attack, but they came very close. my cousin and i picked up thick tree branches and were ready for battle. the only other time i had trouble with dogs was on the island of koh lipe (about 1 hour north by boat from langkawi, malaysia)... we were a little drunk and you have to walk through the jungle to get back to the place were staying at (around an hour walk), forgot our headlamps so we were stumbling around in the dark, and took a wrong turn and ended up walking into a monk's monastery, the dog's went crazy, still, none of us (there were 4 of us) got bitten.

Yea, it sucks here. Please stay as far away as you can, it's hell on earth.

The problem is, to get in and out of those slices of "heaven" you must drive down a road. Most times than not, locals live on those roads and those locals feed scraps to the dogs, bringing them out in large numbers. Sometimes those dogs bite people.

However, if you have ever left your home country, you would have known that many of the best places on earth have roads leading to them.

Just like everywhere on earth, it has it's good and bad places. Dogs are everywhere here, so it's not unusual to come across them even in the most upscale areas.

People who say it's only a shit hole, have not gone outside the tourist areas and know nothing about what they speak of. It would be the equivalent of visiting the USA, only seeing Hollywood, then basing your entire view of the USA on that alone.

I actually learned how to climb at Railay about 11 years ago. It was STUNNING back then, nothing was there but a few bungalows, 1 or 2 bars and that was it. It was incredible.

When I was in Korea, some of the soldiers would pick up strays and keep them sometimes. Our LT had adopted a little mutt/beagle mix and let it run around the company area. Our 1st Sergeant kept warning him that if he didn't keep it in his room or on a leash he was going to get "rid of it". Low and behold, one day we all get called to a formation and the first Sergeant was standing over a little bridge with that dog in hand. He wrapped some 550 cord around it's neck, tied it to the bridge and tossed it over the side and let it hang. All we could do was sit there and listen to it die. I've seen some fucked up shit in my day, but Jesus, that was fucking brutal.

For killing a street dog? Not gonna happen. They beat the shit out of them with sticks and pipes for NO reason at all. koh tarutao marine national park is even more awesome. koh lipe is in that chain of islands, as is the actual island of koh tarutao:

which is where they filmed Survivor Thailand. The new, hippest, undeveloped, but coolest island currently in southern Thailand is Koh Bulon. They only have one bar, and it rocks.

Thanks Quiet and DWB for opening my eyes. I shouldn't base my opinion on a country around some stories posted on this and other boards. I guess I am just used to my quiet life in Canada. It still seems strange how many whores there are there but I guess thats poverty for you.
