OK - so I noticed that we're 3 pages deep and no one has answered the original questions yet (not that I blame them for being distracted)!
I would *DEFINITELY* join an affiliate program for your site and promote it. As has been pointed out, you seem to be in that 1% category that has the personality to keep a solo site going by constantly interacting w/ your fans. That would certainly keep the surfers coming back!
I'd like to see the site have a better payment processor - and some more prominent 'join' type links to let them know there is more waiting for them. You give plenty away for free, so no one should be offended by a 'join now' type of plug at the end of each post.
Good luck w/ the venture! I'll be keeping an eye out for that affiliate program!

I also agree here. Basically what I am doing is slowly adding more visibility to the "join" link, until I get the best tradeoff and it starts backfiring. It must be said, though, that already now basically every non-bounce visitor ends up seeing the payment page - so there may not be too much added value in putting join links more "in your face".
Also I certainly wouldn't want to end up having blinking "join" signs everywhere - I think one of the reasons why the thingy seems to enjoy some viral power right now, is that people don't feel it to be a too obvious commercial site (i.e, a teaser blog as a wrapper of a payment page... btw., I honestly enjoy the fact that people come back to read the posts, even whenever they not join... not to mention the fact that there is some indirect value in that)

---> right now I won't. I would change the payment provider. When you use Epoch and CCBILL you will get a lot more webmasters who are willing to promote you. Zombaio is another option, but right now webmasters/affiliates still prefer ccbill or epoch. They both come with usefull (free) tools for stats etc.
