                                          If you use some internet rando's code on your site without knowing what it does then a) you kind of owe yourself a punch in the face too, and b) it could have been hacked by anyone, because OP's code sucks.

                                                                              It depends on what you consider a hack. Actually breaking into the server? No, you could not do that with javascript running in the user's browser I would think.

                                                                              However, you certainly could place material other than what was agreed on into the webpage from the site. So, you could definitely take a good user experience and turn it into hell on wheels for the user and to the site owner that definitely could look like a hack.

                                                                                  If you host someone else's code on your site that loads further code from an external site, such as that in the other thread by OP, but also including typical advertising, tracking/analytics, embedded media, recaptcha, Cloudflare or JS/CSS remotely loaded from CDNs then you're hacking your own site.

                                                                                  Which is why the site owner is at least partly to blame, perhaps fully, for anything that happens to their site after that.

                                                                                  The routine use of embedded third party code (hacking your own site) is exactly why most of the web is quagmire of steaming, flyblown dogshit these days, only barely usable with ad/malware/javascript blocking.

                                                                                              I know because we kicked out most of the sites listed as your referrals months ago. Its all garbage.

                                                                                              They are using an advanced bot engine that will not only simulate a hit your site, it will go on to simulate clicks to your pages but NONE of it is real.

                                                                                              Its almost impossible to distinguish from real traffic. This is one of the reasons Alexa closed down because bots like this were making their rankings useless

                                                                                                      You used to be able to filter this crap out by looking at click thrus, testing if javascript was enabled, analysing log files etc etc but now they have go so sophisticated that its almost impossible to tell. They can easily fool GA and Alexa
