have you contacted them about the bill? How many times and what methods have you tried to contact them?
I had a case where a client did not pay for a shoot I did for them. I sent them an invoice each month, a special letter with each invoice AND I called and emailed many times.
After 6 months I sent them a registered letter indicating that I would seek a Small claims court judgement against them. They paid up promptly then with apologies.
Don't just rush to court, the judges want to see that you made reasonable attempts to collect your money before you filed your claim.
I don't recommend the collection agencies unless you have a LOT of deadbeats or you have a judgement and only need to collect...and only use a collection agency if the amount is over Ten Grand.Comment

Well, we've been burnt before by webmasters long before the economic recession and all I can say is from that moment forward we would go under contract and get paid up front... No pay, no content... This puts the burden of responsibility on you to pony up the materials, and you're protected, the risk then is with the webmaster as so it should be as they're the ones making all the $ off your content. So collect for 2-3 shoots first, then deliver, if they want to move forward, collect for more, etc, and use the farmers market method... Sucks that rich douche-bags blow off good artists!Comment

Maybe it's time for programs to start securing contracts with select shooters. This freelance model is obviously coming apart at the seems in these tough economic times. i have somewhere around $20k outstanding with a few different programs.
