What are some tricks to see how my competitor got so big?

A couple tips I would do would be to check his backlinks. See how many, and how many quality ones( alot of his traffic may be organic) Also see if any may look like paid links then find similar sites offering the same services.

Also run a search for his name in google see if you can find any site advertising him. Good luck!

baddog offered a service a while back, not sure how effective it is or if he still does; wherein you can get all sorts of deep metrics on what type of traffic, how much and where on any site.

theres no information on the site. is it pricey? I only want to look up 1 site and can anyone vouch on how good the results are?

traffic dont mean members dont get caught up in the alexa ego crap, you cant buy groceries with alexa rankings

What he did 5 years ago doesn't really matter, even if you find out what he did, it's very unlikely you will be able to duplicate it now...
