I am not really trying to argue with you, merely trying to help for the next time.
My personal feelings about chiropractors is based on my professional experience with them . . . . and actually, now that I think about it, I had an opportunity to get involved in an insurance scam many years prior to that. The centerpiece? A chiropractor.
I initially asked you if Aetna was a PPO or an HMO, because I am not really sure if they offer both or not. I have been researching a group plan for my company and Aetna HMO was one of the options.
With an HMO you must start with your primary care physician. If they refer you to a chiro it looks to me like you only have to pay a $15 co-pay with 20 visits a year. Of course, since you have a $5k deductible it is entirely possible that the plans are completely different, but I would not think it would be that different.
If you had a PPO then you don't need a referral, however, [every plan I saw] had at least a 25% coinsurance AFTER the deductible for 24 visits a year.
So, my first question needs to be addressed first. But my honest thoughts are that if the doctor put in the script instead of the non-doctor it would have had a much better chance of going through. Why Aetna did not say that? Perhaps because the question was not posed to them in that manner.
Sorry, it's a PPO.
Do you think if I called them and asked them their reasoning they would give me a different answer than this 8 week bullshit? I don't think it will make a diff either way, since they've already said no to it. I haven't called them since they rejected the MRI because I'm so upset and confused I'm afraid I'm going to go off on them, then they will be less helpful than they already are!Comment

Feel for you Aaliyah theres nothing worse than back pain, however this is what I cant understand about the US health care system, you see I am from the UK and as such we take our free health care for granted and really cant understand why anyone would not want it.
It has nothing to do with choice as you see we do, contrary to what alot of republicans think a) have the choice to either get health insurance or pay for private health care.
B)Our system may not be quickest but if its life threatening then you wont go on a waiting list and even then as Aaliyah has found out its instant as we all insurance companies their first thought is do we have to pay?
If your backs still bad you should just pop across to the UK and come to the hospitals here thats what everyone else does
And health care is a right in a so called society ! How can doctors etc refuse to treat someone because they cant afford the fees
Hope you get better soon Aaliyah and can get back to making hot vids

I'm betting the 8 week stipulation is there to keep drug seekers from using 'back pain' as an excuse for narcotics and most back pain can clear up on its own usually because someone just strains a muscle lifting something they shouldn't in which case paying for expensive diagnostics is a waste. Even so if the doctors really thought your injury was dangerous I'm betting if they put 'stat' on the mri request it would get approved, I've had to do that a couple times with my insurance company... walk out of doc office and into ER and then everything is covered, explains why some costs are high because of insurance rules.Comment

While there may be points and counterpoints about this that or the other thing, isn't this thread really saying "I pay for insurance and got denied the first thing my doctor told me I needed" ???
This isn't just some gal calling up and saying I want an MRI and I want you to pay for it, or I have back pain and need pain killers. This is a doctor, calling for an MRI of a patient and being told no. And the crazies out there would have you think the government would stand between you and your doctor, when it's the insurance company doing that EXACT thing that has fucked it up in the first place.
Hope you get well soon. That should be your only concern, not fighting with insurance companies

That's your logic? If prisoners get it?
Well, like I said, when I look at my plan options for PPO's chiro is dealt with differently than standard medical care, like mental health claims.Sorry, it's a PPO.

I don't know that a phone call is going to reveal anything different at this point but if you think you can do it without upsetting yourself . .
Even if The Heron's theory is correct, how would Aetna know that?Comment

also, they made me wait all this time while they "considered it" if they had just said no a day or two after both doctors talked to them, I would have paid out of pocket for an MRI last week. I found out yesterday, and the soonest they could get me in is Friday. Thats 2 weeks with a bone in my spine out of place and a possible disc problem. While there may be points and counterpoints about this that or the other thing, isn't this thread really saying "I pay for insurance and got denied the first thing my doctor told me I needed" ???

I get what you're saying but then why did they give me drugs right away but made me wait to find out what's actually causing the pain? And it's not a muscle, it's a bone in my back (t4) that is slipping backwards.. you can just look at my back and see it's sticking out, you can also see it clearly on the xray. what I need to find out w the MRI is if it's also a disc problem. Rt now it's 50/50.I'm betting the 8 week stipulation is there to keep drug seekers from using 'back pain' as an excuse for narcotics and most back pain can clear up on its own usually because someone just strains a muscle lifting something they shouldn't in which case paying for expensive diagnostics is a waste. SO you think if I went to the ER rt now and asked for an MRI it might be covered by my ins? hmm I never considered that.. mbe Ill call themComment

Lie on the floor, or a very stiff bed with your knees up and a pile of pillows under them.
Make sure your back is relatively flat, and totally relaxed. Read, or watch movies.
Do nothing for hours if you possibly can.
Another thing to try is a hottub at about body temperature for several hours.
Also, try supporting yourself by the arms or shoulders so that the rest of your body just hangs in a natural position.
'Antigravity' is the key. Keep all stress or weight off your back.Comment

The 50 pages of fine print I got after I signed up? Yeah I guess you are right, but us Americans put our faith in health insurance and we pay monthly thinking that is an accident or injury such as this occurs, we are safe.
Aetna isn't a rinky dink company it is one of the major ones, and I have the most expensive PPO plan that was available to me. I think I was safe to assume they would help me here.
Quick, off of the top of your head, what's your health insurance's policy on back injuries and MRIs?Comment

There are some good points here...first and foremost if you are injured go to a real doctor NOT a chiropractor, thats the way it is deal with it. Had you been ordered the MRI by a real doctor you would not have had this issue...I know I have been there.
second remember the mantra about health care reform how we would have to wait so long to see a doctor or get treatment....8 weeks huh? My point being that is a possibility NOW.
third look at this whole scenario, usually insurance companies will automatically deny every claim the first time, because most people wont fight it...keep fighting. This is why Americans have decided that government needs to control health care, because as a group, we have been abused by insurance companies for so long that we no longer feel that individually we have any control or recourse. So we turn to the government.
Now I'm not a big fan of the Presidents ideas on health care but I completely understand how it came to this. When things get beyond the control of the individual he/she turns to government to control it.Mike South

It was interesting to see all the fuss on the news about health care reform.
It seems many Americans were more than willing to express their abhorrence to adopting an NHS style health care system. For some reason you guys don't seem to like state run things which are run on a not for profit basis?
I think a couple of our eccentric and rich politicians may even have appeared on American TV saying how bad the British NHS is! I doubt whether the conservative politician who appeared on American TV talking down the NHS, mentioned that his party leader David Cameron, himself a millionaire, had his own son treated on the NHS for years.Comment

Coporate Medicine Vs. Socialized Medicine. It's all just words and tags. And America loves to point fingers at other countries and call them socialist when they are not trying to wage a world war.
People should think of the health care system like law enforcement. Would you really want law enforcement privatized?Comment

That's what I don't get about the whole socialist argument. You trust the government with police, fire, postal service, water, zoning, the military and collecting taxes. It does these things fairly well. Why not health care?Coporate Medicine Vs. Socialized Medicine. It's all just words and tags. Just get a new mattress and your back will be fine - that's what I plan to do tomorrow
At least that's one good thing here in CR - I have no need for medical insurance because the private hospitals for just about anything is dirt cheap, yet high quality and no wait times.
Last time I was in because all the bacteria in my intestines got wiped out and they decided to start swelling and moving around, I was in there for most of a day, private area bed with IV, dozens of tests, etc... came to about $200.
The time before, I went for a full battery of tests (which all were excellent I'm pleased to say) including multiple blood tests, EKG, etc... and cost about $150 total.Skype variuscr - Email varius AT gmailComment

And I'm not even saying socialist or government if you want to use different words, I'm just saying out here in LA, the hospitals are dumping quadraplegics on skid row because they don't have the money to pay or a place to be released to so we need something.
I don't get why doctors fall into this elitist group when even lawyers have to volunteer their services to the indigent when the court appoints them as part of the bar requirement in most states.
Not that I'm saying all doctors feel or act this way, just making a point about the systemComment
-
Okay, gotta ask.
If Bill Gates suddenly became a quadriplegic he would only stay at the hospital for the time that he was treatable along with whatever rehab they might give. Then he would be released to his home.
If a homeless guy is also a quad are you suggesting that the hospital should give him a free bed because he has no where else to go?
Just wondering.Comment
-
Actually, I don't even think they treated him because he didn't have health insurance since he won a pretty major law suit and he wasn't the only person this happened to, just the only handicapped person that we know of.Okay, gotta ask.

And in chicago a shooting victim died in the parking lot because the hospital turned the patient away because he didn't have health insurance.
Yes, I think there is something as wrong with those things as if a fireman didn't put out the fire in your house without getting paid or a police officer let your home get broken into because you weren't paying your law enforcement insurance.
One thing is for sure, if I get charge with a crime and I don't have money, the court gives me a lawyer, but If I'm walking down the street and get shot, the hospital wants to check my insurance card.Comment
-
In theory, but those are the ones turning you away to prove a point because they are overcrowded or letting you die in the waiting room (by the way, this is corporate medicine, not socialized yet LOL).
Also, you'll get sent to a county hospital if you're a mugging victim without any id even if you have health insurance if you're unconscious and sometimes even not just because it's closer, and also everyone else is paying the bill for this sloppy poor service with their own health insurance premiums anyway as if this isn't "corporate socialized medicine".
I'm not one hundred percent behind the Obama plan, but at least he's trying to do something besides start a world war.
P.S. if doctors showed up at your house like in the 50's and 60's and prices hadn't skyrocketed, I'd believe in privatized medicine by the way, but things are just totally beyond believability for the average person. It's cheaper to just die. And forget perscriptions. Drug companies are the blood suckers they need to get next after all this banking bullshit. I can find better, safer and more effective drugs on the streets for what I need than my doctor will prescribe me for simple painLast edited by smutnut; 08-20-2009, 04:23 PM.Comment

update for those that care: I just got my MRI results and along with the bone that is protruding it IS a bulging disc. I was told by my doctor to "take it easy" which means to stretching no excersizing no twisting or turning, etc for the next 4 weeks. 4 weeks.. ugh!
Could be worse, could of been a torn or ruptured disc so that is good
I don't want to get into a debate about chiropractors but Im just going to say I am confident and have 100% faith in mine and believe he can fix me over time. It's not the type of injury that would require surgery anyways, but I will be consulting with my doctor to see what he suggests, besides pain medication.
I AM going back to work (webcaming) but I'm just going to do it by appointment only, and do mostly private shows where we are just talking (thank god I have 4 or 5 customers that adore me so much they will pay me to sit there and talk for hours) or masturbating while I'm sitting/laying on my back only. I'm def not gna make even half as much as I was making but enough to get by at least. I have been keeping up with emails and blog posts and update son my site so at least I don't have to worry about that.. I just wish I could find a comfortable way to lay flat or sit up straight on my floor and work on my laptop so I Can at least keep up with my site..any suggestions?Comment
