They are crap! Was at the Kino Flow warehouse/factory/showroom last Thursday and was asking about the LED lighting for whole sets. I know that about 2 years ago Kino Flo was getting into the LED lighting market.
The tech and the west coast sales rep were there and told me that Kino Flow who did a distrabution deal with the company that makes all of the LED lights for sets, backed out of the deal after 2 years of getting reports of the lights going down on set.
The lights worked great and did not change temperature when turned up and turned down, but was not solid and dependable as florescent lights. They were very expensive and always seemed yo came back.
Kino Flo started getting a bad wrap for the LED failures on major motion picture sets. I was told the Kino Flo owner said "fuck this" and took back all of the LED lights that Kino Flo sold and sent them all back to where they came from.
The Tech told me they would be very good if they did not constantly fail.

But now I use a kino ring light on cam along with my main kino lights on stands and one kino overhead on a boom.
The ring light blows away any light on top of the cam. The reason is that when you use a light that mounts directly on the hot shoe you get the lighting a few inches ABOVE where you are aiming with the lens. But with a ring light you get a nice uniform light that is perfectly placed since it is shining from a circle around the lens.
The only drawback with the kino fluorescent ring light as opposed to my Lite Panel Leds is that the kino ringlight has to have a ballast which kinda weighs down my cam even more.
I would be interested in a kino LED ringlight IF it doesn't put out that "blue-ish" shade that the leds have always seemed to have a tendency to produce.
One thing for sure...the ability to light up scenes very nicely has never been better.

You can buy an extension cord that in 12 feet from the ballast to the actual ring light and mount your ballast on the nearest light stand. Thats what i do when i use the ring light

I agree %100. I like to try certain things out for myself, but when you have a company like Kino Flo completely back out of distributing a product because it keep coming back for repairs. That states a lot about a product right there.
I do know Kino Flo got heavily invested in the LED market for 2 years. If you are on set and that shit doesn't work when you are paying for permits, insurance, location, etc, that is not acceptable.
And as far as B and H is concerned these LED companies probably made a sweet distribution deal with them.

Don't discount the led. I'm just saying that the kino fluorescent ring light does a better job. Those Lite Panels also kick ass. Before I had them I tried a lot of different lights on the cam for the fill and none of them were even close to the Lite Panels.
The ring light is just a step above is all.
But the Lite Panels are awesome as well. Matter of fact I used the Lite Panel LEDS and nothing else when I shot CM in Amsterdam in 2007. The kit is in a briefcase sized case so it was easy to carry on the plane.
They will tend to cast a bit blue-ish though, especially in a straight up comparison to kino flo's. But those guys at kino are the MASTERS of tuning those fluorescent bulbs to the perfect temp.-Robbie

Good points, But the broken LED light panel on my desk, the kino tech (who never sells me anything, because he cant), 4 different sales people at 4 different stores with the same stories about LED light panels breaking down on peoples sets end up shaping what i think about a product.
After leaving Kino Flo i further researched LED lighting. The conclusions i came to was LED technology is still very new and has not been perfected. The price is way to high and the lighting systems are not very stable and reliable.
But i did learn that Cool Flows are pretty inexpensive and good for lighting a green Screen.

Lighting is what you make of it, you can have shit! equipment and make whatever you are shooting looking great!. As for Kino's go, they are the standard for 100+million dollar movies that are filmed on blue or a green screen.
They are also the go to lights in news studios, so are Arris. When you are shooting a 100+ million dollar movie, you can't afford to have to wait because your lighting has broken down.
I have Kino's and they are great!, I also have a litepanel Led light that is great too. I tell people don't get sucked! in on what anyone else tells you, try them out to see if they work for you.
All I know, is if I have a 2-100+ million movie budget, I would only use Kino's. If there good enough to be used for both Ironman movies, there good enough for me

I sometimes shoot (stills) with various LED lightsources in the studio (not on-camera mounts) - and despite all attempts to color-correct in post edit, it's damn near impossible to eliminate all the blue hues.
But I like the LED sometimes for the blue-ish effect when it's needed.Comment
