do you believe that? Not sure what a hot dog costs in nyc but lets say $5. he needs to sell 44 hotdogs an hour just to pay the rent at 365 days and 8 hour days. Now granted he is making enough to hire someone the rest of the time as the labor is pretty much not worth thinking about. So he could be open longer but some days it rains or is bitter cold etc. Hotdogs probably are not big sellers before 10 am. traffic probably drops off pretty good after 7 pm.

In good location, he could probably sell 100 of those per hour... at $5/each that's $4k in sales per day, and that doesn't even include upsells like beverages or some other stuff...

They probably make a very large amount on beverages as well -- off-brand water for cheap -- also the workers may just work for tips.
What you really need to ask is.. how clean is that hotdog cart! *shudder*
well for the rent he is paying, wouldnt cost much to have a fulltime team of albino midgets scouring the cart 24/7 ( albino midgets are much cleaner incase you were wondering )
It's all based on the weather.. seriously. If you've got a nice decent summer with not so many rainy days.. you could do VERY well with it. I know someone who does this as a side business in the summer months here. Lately they've been complaining because our weather has been rain most of the summer so most vendors are sucking it right now in Winnipeg.

Minus $1700 a day in rent, minus supplies, minus waste and other things associated with doing business... I highly doubt the guy was making big bucks. Although if he made $500 a day profit then I think thats a nice life for a hot dog vendor.
On 43rd and 6th in NY their is a Indian guy selling Biryani (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biryani) at 6$ out of the cart and I always make a point of stopping by and getting a package every time I am in NY...the guy makes it the same way they do it in India.
He said he sells around 1000 a day mostly to the Cab drivers. Also its not a cart he is on, it more looks like a mini house.
Another thing is I have seen this guy selling at 5 AM in the morning to cab drivers who are changing shifts and I have bought at 2 AM after a night out...looks like a 24 hour operation.
