Hurray!! Here come the personal attacks...
How much more "nuanced thinking" should the police woman have done before reacting to the situation?? She was called to the scene, so obviously the public / family was in fear for their safety and / or the old lady's safety... She told the old woman several times to drop the knife... But you're saying she didn't assess the scene enough?? Didn't investigate all of the nuances of the situation??
I guess you would prefer they all just huddle around / draw up maps of the situation / call in crisis management teams etc - right??
Did you even WATCH the video?? 17 SECONDS elapsed from the time the cop first *asked* her "Ma'am, can you please put the knife down" until the time she took her down (as trained). 17 Seconds!! 30 seconds further into the video, the old woman is still fighting the cop - still holding the knife - AND - APPEARS TO EVEN REACH FOR THE COP'S GUN!!
Do you really not understand the concept of law enforcement and what the job entails?? Seriously??
That is precisely what they are trained to do. They are not supposed to stand toe-to-toe and wrestle a weapon away from someone. The very first move is the take down.
Ummmm... and then what would you suggest that the male cops do differently??

This was an unforunate event, I have no idea what was going through the womens head. She was 80, she could of been senile?, or hard of hearing?. Or just does not trust the police?, you never know.
She should of dropped the knife and listend to the police, but if anybody thinks that she was of great danger to herself, or the police then we are seeing two different things here.
This happend here a few years ago, where the police shot a homeless women with a screw driver in her hand.
To me what is going on is the police have lowered the standard of who they hire now. You use to have to be 6'0" plus and weigh a certain weight. They dropped all of that because women could not become police.
Just listen to the police and you won't get slammed, well sometimes you will

its like the military, cops have criminal backgrounds now and still get hired. and the percentage of new recruits (soldiers) with criminal background is increasing as the years go by, its a numbers game.
local news: cops took a guy, shot him, dumped body in car, then *drum roll please*

Yes, she has Alzheimer's, yes she's 80+, but the cop was in a no win situation and followed her training and procedures.
Why isn't anyone in an uproar about the FAMILY / daughter of this Alzheimer's patient who left her locked in the car in a Walmart parking lot???

She had already (reportedly) hit some kids, threatened other people in the parking lot, and had cut herself... And it sure looks like she was grabbing for the cop's gun when she was on the ground (IMO).

I respect the police, they have to deal with so much shit!, but this is what they are trained to do. If they can't handel an 80 year old women with a knife?, how the hell would they handel a real threat?.Comment

Assess the situation? It's not that complicated really.... You first realize it's a 80yo slow moving granny walking with a cane... brandishing a small knife... obviously confused, most certainly suffering from senility or alzheimer... so she obviously doesn't "deserve" anything... No one around her.. not a danger to anyone since the cops arrived.. there's no hurry... must try to find a safe way to get the knife out of her hand before smashing her head on the pavement and nearly killing her...

People should watch this video before commenting I think. Take a look at that butterknife! Take a listen to the "witness" who said the cop never asked her to drop it, she just charged in and knocked her down. Amazing how we rely on witnesses and they suck so very very badly.
