I think the more likely cause is that PCR tests are shit for this. People are still travelling all over.

I don't think there is such thing as asymptomatic COVID. I think there are people with varying levels of the virus in them, including not enough to make them sick. The PCR test detects any amount of virus - so it cannot be ruled out that someone had a cold or a flu, went and got tested, PCR came back positive but it wasn't really the COVID making them sick. We cannot reasonably believe that we stopped Influenza, a virus that has been with us for centuries if not millennia, in a year by wearing masks that cannot possibly filter it.
