Your right fris, i have had a succesfull website running on WP doing 120-200k a day without a problem. I saw someone stating wp sucks for huge traffic in another thread, wanted to reply but i somehow knew you would jump this case.

Somewhere above several million pageviews a day served, caching became important. Other than that, Wordpress performance isn't really a problem.
