if you want to check key word density I use a firefox plugin search status 1.30
if you want to research a keyword you can hit google.

don't just check google.com, that's just US traffic. Check world serps at http://www.geoseo.com for free. If you want more analysis subscribe to seomoz.org for $$.

the seobook one is quite handy (though a little inaccurate i find, sometimes (even with personalised search off, 10 results per page etc) when i manually check it can be +-5 positions or so)

Its going to be pretty hard to find a free tool that gives you accurate reports.

You don't have to get software. I'm pretty sure there is a site where you can do it. Forget the url, though. You can just enter the keywords and see where you are in google. try this http://www.googlerankings.com/

Tap 'Google Top 1000 SERP's Checker' into Google, or something like that. Pretty cool tool that checks relatively accurately what your current ranking is for certain keywords.
