Google doesn't like those text links over the limit, that is true. I don't know how to look up that limit, but I guess it is on the google seo tips pages. Probably google tries to hide a lot of the rules of how it rates pages.

I think that saying there is a "sweet spot" is a little misleading. From what I read, it sounds like Google cuts off anything in the anchor text past 55 characters, which makes sense, because otherwise you could abuse that as part of a long trail strategy. As far as a "sweet spot" goes, I'd say that depends on how aggressively you want to target a specific keyword or set of keywords. Long tail being the less aggressive approach, of course.
