Yes and no.

If he were to become incapacitated before the election the Republicans would vote to offer up another candidate. But that candidate wouldn't be able to be put on the ballot due to time constraints to printing new ballots. And many states have deadlines to do so.

In states that allow it, voters could write in the new Republican candidate. In states where Trump won, the electoral college could cast their votes for the new candidate. Some states sanction those who cast votes for somebody other than the winner. But it's like $1000 fine and I'm sure the RNC will pay them. This can also happen even if Trump wins and then dies after the election.

However, if the RNC offers more than one candidate, nobody gets enough votes. More the House votes on the top three winners with each state getting one vote.

Turns out if he dies before the election, the RNC picks a new candidate. Then he would stay on the ballot and the electoral college votes would go to him or the new guy depending on each states laws. So Biden could lose the vote and win in the electoral college under these circumstances.

We literally could have Ted Cruz as president or something weird like that.

Maybe Trump is only saying he has Covid to pre-explain why he will lose the Election. He could also be saying this to soften people up with sympathy before he contests the Election with his hand-picked Supreme Court.

To be honest, there is no good outcome.

If Trump wins, democrats will contest it.
If Biden wins. republicans will contest it.

It's invariably going to be a shit-show. The election date is almost like a count-down to civil war.

Definitely it will be contested either way, and probably it will lead to violence. Regardless of if full blown war breaks out, it will increase the tension. Sadly, it is coming one way or the other.

You have you finger on the pulse of American politics. I would say that's a very likely scenario. Democrats are up to no good with all these ballots being mailed out and they know there's the possibility of fraud. Trump's not going to accept that so this will probably be the most widely contested election in history.
