It was under his watch we all suffered the biggest economic crash since the Great Depression. Something we will be paying for for decades.
Americas deficit grew to a gigantic size and will take decades of taxes to put right or selling the US to China and Arabs.
He took his war on terror into Iraq, on a lie, and allowed Afghanistan terrorists to regroup and this is another debt we will be paying for decades. In lives and money.
The Republicans were so proud of Bush and his great achievements they put up McCain, the man who was the only one they cold find distant enough from Bush to stand a chance. No serious thought was give to the chances of him lasting 8 years, because they chose Palin as his running mate.
Or did they know they were going to get beaten and put up 2 no hopers?
The crash took years to build, a running down of industry, reliance on banking, insurance and related services, the belief that retail sucking in billions of goods from third world countries, a reliance on imported oil and on top of that the banking crisis which broke it.
The West has lived beyond it's means for too long. And it will take years to put right.
Whether tax cuts or spending money will put it right only time will tell. Seven months is way to soon to be judging anyone. The only question the US electorate were given was would Obama/Biden or McCain/Palin be the best to guide America through the next 8 years? I say 8 years because sitting Presidents have a habit of being re-elected.Comment

Agreed. Obama is an incompetent and his polices are a catastrophe but the stimulus was handed out according to the usual pork barrel methods that have very little to do with Obama and everything to do with the entrenched corruption and influence peddling that is endemic in Congress. The "stimulus" was just the biggest pork spending bill of all time. A complete and utter waste of taxpayer funds being distributed to politically connected cronies at the worst possible time. The damage done to the economy and US credibility is likely incalculable........ but most of the blame lies with Pelosi and Reid and all the other two bit corrupt hacks like Murtha, Dodd, and Frank.

I'm just wondering if when you were typing this you ever thought to attach other names to this "under his watch" meme or is your understanding of this recession that over simplified? -- did you ever consider naming members of Congress, a co-equal branch in our system of government and assign them any blame whatsoever? With their ability to actually appropriate and block reforms (because 17 times Bush did ask for economic reforms of Fannie and Freddie) I personally blame them more then I do Bush. In September 2003 Snowe asked for a new regulatory agency to supervise Freddie and Fannie and to set minimum capital requirements. That would of helped us out a lot wouldn't it have?
That's not to say Bush should be absolved; he should've blocked earmarks of those that blocked the Fannie and Freddie reforms in Congress by executive order among other things the bully pulpit of the presidency might have accomplished.
Yet as I type this Barney Frank has before Congress TARP For Main Street Act of 2009. Do you know what it does? While you're attaching blame games to Bush with a flawed understanding of how our system of government works; Democrat congressman are trying to take TARP repayments from banks and instead of reducing the deficit you mentioned want to fund once again those risky low income mortgages that got us into this mess. But no worries somehow should the TARP for Main Street Act of 2009 pass and our economy double dips perhaps into a depression because of laws like it get passed, we'll blame Bush for a law passed in 2009 and not Congress.Comment

I don't blame Clinton for 9/11 and I don't blame him for the recession Bush had when he assumed the presidency either. I don't blame Congress for that recession either. Did Clinton create dot com companies and websites that were valued in the hundreds of millions? No he didn't.
But it's important to understand how our system works... Senate requires cloture. A president seeking reforms can't just wave his hand and get them. For instance if Cap and Trade doesn't pass because the Senate doesn't get cloture this year; should Obama get blamed for that by the left? No the left wingers should recognize how our system of government works and blame the Senate for it's failure.
We failed to reform Fannie and Freddie because of Congress and when we factor in how our system actually works, it's then we can go looking for who to specifically blame for subsequent legislative failures.Comment

Yes I do understand that the financial crash had a lot more to it than what was stated. But the situation is it took a little thing like those mortgages to bring the whole word banking industry crashing down like dominoes. The US economy was so fragile it could not stand up And with it crashing brought down the rest of the world.
It's now obvious the whole system was wrong and vulnerable, not just Fannie and Freddie. A strong economic structure should of been able to withstand Fannie and Freddie.
Here's a thought about where the money for funding has been going for the last few years. How many of those States dependent on Federal funding had industries that moved overseas, taking with them jobs and leaving a bill the rest of the country had to pick up? I was thinking Detroit would fit into that criteria.
How many States or Counties relying on funding today were self funding with industries employing people back the 70s? I have watched the world shift jobs from the West to the Third World for over 40 years In the belief that is made sense. Now we go cap in hand to those countries because they don't buy enough of our goods to balance the debt. Even with our reliance and lead on technology and services.

They are going to show a huge 2 billion profit today. Not bad for a company that needed a gov. handout. We have all been played.
