MYTH: You get what you pay for

I am so sick of reading this everywhere, especially in hosting threads.

You DON'T get what you pay for. You DO get what you deserve.

People who pay alot get fucked over sometimes too. If a shitty host triples his prices, does that all of a sudden make him good?

The ones who charge the most tell you it's because they're the best, but that's not necessarily true. I've had excellent support and service from lower priced companies, and I've had bad experiences with expensive ones that were supposedly the best.

If you do business with a company based on price alone, or based on a 5 minute ICQ conversation, or because they offer ICQ support instead of just ticket based support (those idiots always baffle me), or because a bunch of bought and paid for sig whores chimed into your thread and said "so and so is great", then you deserve what you get, which is probably going to be shit.

Do your homework. You can get aggressive pricing and superior quality. Most hosts don't want you to know this.

The guy with cut rate pricing "claims" to have 24/7/365 support and knowledgeable techs and a redundant network and replacement hardware on hand just like the expensive guys do. How do you know if he's telling the truth? Do your homework.

The expensive guy claims he has to charge that much to have 24/7/365 suport and knowledgeable techs and a redundant network and replacement hardware on hand and that the cheap guy has to be lying because he can't afford all that if he's only charging $XYZ for his service. How do you know if he's telling the truth? Do your homework.

The guy charging more could be lying too, in which case he's a liar with a much higher profit margin.

At the end of the day, paying more doesn't mean you're getting anything better, it just means you're paying more. You need to check up on these guys and make sure they're telling you the truth.
If they lie about one single thing, grab your wallet and run, there's alot of hosts out there who want your business.

Came out of nowhere really. I've been with the same host for awhile now, no problems, no worries, great pricing.

One the one hand, I hate the cut rate guys who lie about shit, like when they won't even admit to being a reseller. If they lie about one thing, they'll lie about anything, and if I don't trust you, you're not getting a penny from me.

On the other hand, I also get annoyed with the hosts that tell you that if you're not paying 3 times more than you currently are, then you just don't care about your business and you're with a shitty host. As if paying more for it magically makes it better.

Both sides of the argument are right to a degree. Absolutely much of what you say is 100% true, but the statement "you get what you pay for" isn't always all about price. For example, if one's focus is instead on reputation and the company that many of the top industry clients are hosting with and have been with for years and years, then that extra cost might become less important or altogether immaterial, and in that sense one really would "get what they pay for" as opposed to always going with the cheapest.

In the end it's of course all about finding a host that makes you happy, period.

For me the cost of hosting, whether I'm paying more or less than others, is a business write-off so I really don't put the emphasis on price but on service and reliability. I want less worries, not more. Any host worth their salt should know that and deliver on it 100%.

I hear your logic and it is sound.

But here is a fact : Every cut rate host I ever had, got hacked within months.

I would just change my DNS back to my other server and close the cheap account.
And that was the end of the hacking.
                              Time after time this happened.

I think you think I like to disagree with you for the sake of doing so... but that isn't the case. I do agree with you on all points here.

I think sometimes where we cross signals has been your mistakenly lumping us into one extreme or the other when really with all things considered we aim to hit on all points including value. Not the most expensive by a long shot but not the cheapest by a smaller margin than most would guess. Based on Tier IV data center costs alone, we just can't hit certain price points due space and power cost, even in wholesale.

It's not easy for people to shop for hosting because really doing due diligence to sort out truth from lies to have real facts is completely obfuscated 9 times out of 10. At all price points its possible to get good or bad value. Without question, some of the most expensive hosting is ironically enough some of the worst out there... No different than some of the least expensive hosting being absolutely horrible to the extent of costing its customers revenue that they may or may not even know they are missing.

It's our goal to be middle-low in pricing while delivering the highest quality and still keeping things in check with the moving carrots of finance and technology so that we can always be viable and reinvesting and improving upon our service delivery. Every day is a challenge and for sure I would say that I'm never bored with it.

Anyone who knows fuck all regarding the meaning of "implied value" could have told you that. But then again, most people are retarded. You can sell the exact same product with different labels. One for $5 and one for $60. Odds are you'll make just as many sales with the $60 product. People think you get would you pay for, and the higher value implies higher quality. definitely not always the case though.

Depends of how much percentage tax you pay and how much you gain from the higher price
