Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko signed a law into effect yesterday making possession of pornography a criminal offense.
According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice, pornography may only be kept ?for medical purposes.? Punishment for possession will include fines and up to three years of imprisonment.

I have lived and worked in a country that tried to ban hardcore porn, so I don't worry about it now. Most countries will not ban porn, even though some might cut back on what is allowed. Men in the Ukraine will still be jerking off. While that happens some will still pay.

We have a more sensible outlook to porn in Czech but if they did ban it I would move to another country where it was accepted. A big move but one than can be done.

I see your point but Governments limit our "Free Speech" all the time. You're not allowed to shoot or publish scat, bestiality or pissing porn in many countries. In other countries they have chosen to ban all porn. When it's a democracy the electorate have their chance to have their say and kick out a Government they don't like.

It won't affect my personal legal situation because in my country even everything you mentioned is legal, but only because it is not "my worries" I will still not support it. And profiting from it will not change my mind. Whether it is American webmasters struggling with unfair 2257, Saudis cut their heads off or Ukrainians going to jail for possessing of something I consider freedoms.. they are the ones who get my moral support.

I also disagree about of your view of Ukraine as bench mark. They have been very "free" regarding porn, and that is probably why they have had so much problems with child abuse. Instead of focusing on that problem alone, they nuke everyone. Efficient, yes... but not exactly the right way to handle it IMO.

how is power being "abused"?

there is a legislative process for creating laws. the process is followed, a new law is created. there is a legislative process for rescinding laws.

you can't make the argument about a law being unfair or restricting rights or freedoms,... because that is the essence of practically all law.

i think you are confused as to what "democracy" typically means when it comes to common usage. representative officials are elected to pass laws. if people disagree with the laws that are passed, they don't get elected again. laws can be passed. laws can be rescinded.
