I pull business off of Twitter on a daily basis. I can't do that with a pet rock.

    Spend you some brain.

You should post on Twitter about this post that talks about Twitter. Oooh...that would be soooo cool.

How Twitter Will Change the Way We Live

The one thing you can say for certain about Twitter is that it makes a terrible first impression. You hear about this new service that lets you send 140-character updates to your "followers," and you think, Why does the world need this, exactly? It's not as if we were all sitting around four years ago scratching our heads and saying, "If only there were a technology that would allow me to send a message to my 50 friends, alerting them in real time about my choice of breakfast cereal."

Read the rest at the above link....

Funnily enough - I dont know what the deal is about this Twitter stuff - seems like such a hassle and personally, Im not one for announcing to the world every move i make or every mood im in - i evidently signed up for an account when it first launched bc i keep getting email notices about people "following me" - i cant even remember the password i used to get on there and shut it down LOL

I used to mock people who twitter, now I use it at least five times a day.

I find it to be a very effective means of publicity for our events and our company.

Well, it does have more utility than the Pet Rock. It's used essentially as another promo forum eg. upcoming concerts listings, announcements, etc. (no different than celeb facebook and myspace profiles, just a different presentation of the same info). I guess instead of logging into facebook you can just check out the Twitter URL of your celeb without having to login since twitter doesn't require registeration, or see what a friend is up to.

I don't use Facebook, so I don't know if it originally had the ability to update status message using mobile phone, which is what twitter is all about, so that may have been the essential difference. Micro-blog from anywhere using your phone.

I don't think Twitter is going anywhere, but the hype around it and general interest in it will probably nose dive. But I could be underestimating people's narcissism. I think a lot of it has to do with people who have never known what 15 minutes of fame feels like, and this a way to create the impression that people 'out there' (the 'followers') are actually interested in what they have to say or what they're doing. Truth is, nobody outside their circle of friends who they already correspond with is actually reading any of it.

I left potential money on the table because I never blogged when blogging was the new fascination a couple years ago. To this day I just have no interest in it, even though it's potential money. I'm sure there are similar money making opportunities on Twitter. But again, I'm not interested in making the investment required for it for potential gains.

I don't really even know what twitter is. Its kind of like a little blog where you can write 1 liners and people subscribe and get updates to your blog, right?

Kind of like facebook has when you first login?

It might have another standard use. As a guy, if I ever decided to use Twitter, I'd do so for the same reason many guys use facebook and myspace - to scope out hot girls profiles and try to hook up. I'm sure the younger guys are all over it.

It'd be interesting to compare blog traffic and twitter traffic from an affiliate standpoint, (as opposed to sponsor/company standpoint - direct advertising bought by companies like Dell). I'm talking real traffic and money, not earning $50 every couple of weeks and thinking that's a great source of income.

Doesn't look too smart on the back of the envelope.. Of course I don't know their profit margins and maybe they're paying less in wages... maybe they only spend an hour a day on it each and the other 7 hours on their real job just so Dell can say they have 40 people on it.. Maybe it's an expensive ad to get mentioned in newpaper articles about Twitter etc etc.

Sure, it is a similar thing in that it is social networking of a sort but I think they tap into different impulses and audiences. Facebook is like the evolution of newsgroups and message boards and Twitter is more like the evolution of instant messaging.

One will be a mainstream top 5 site, and one will be a top 100 site with a decent following, particularly in the tech crowd. Twitter could change fortunes but they are innovating so painfully slow, and their growth has already stunted. In the mean time Facebook is in all out attack mode against Twitter. Updated news-stream, roll out of proper real time search engine, the "everyone button" on status updates, vanity URLs, etc. It won't take long.

If you want to see it for yourself do this. Type in a celebrity, product, band or whatevers name in Google and find their Twitter page and count their followers. Than repeat the process but check their Facebook page. In almost every case (with a few rare exceptions) Facebook absolutely stomps Twitter in the number of followers - and why wouldn't they, Facebook has mainstream appeal and numbers. Not to mention that Facebook has a renewed focus on these pages and public profiles recently so you can expect their popularity and utility to spike even more and in turn dwarf Twitter's.

Twitter has a lot of work to do if it wants to grow up and be mainstream, but the pace at which they are adding value to their service is really very slow in comparison to their competition, mostly because they don't want to alienate their base. Facebook has obviously set a course (and for obvious reasons, they want to own real time search and the social search market) and to be honest I don't see Twitter stopping them. Twitter will have some utility, but unless it starts moving fast it will stagnate (as it already had last month). Facebook is simply a shitload bigger, innovating/adding features a hell of a lot faster and they have set their targets on Twitter. At this rate Twitter will never ever compete on Facebook's level.

It's possible to make money off twitter but it is still apples and oranges comparing an established $26 billion dollar company with a worldwide presence grossing $3 million off Twitter compared to Joe Webmaster trying to squeeze change out of twitter users.

I won't knock it though. I think the people that are converting off Twitter are using the same model - simply increasing their online exposure by having a Twitter account. In addition to posting updates on their website, they can keep customers and potential customers updated closer to real-time using Twitter. This could encourage somebody who might not join a static site to think about it doing so.

Spammers, as usual, are probably making some money. The Twitter account I opened 3 weeks ago got its first spam today. I've only followed one person and I assume it's through their account that the spammer found my account.
