I grew up in Croydon, and can vouch that it's a shithole.

I left England in 1981 after I realized my hometown--London--was an awful place to live, and full of awful people. The few times I've been back since then has only confirmed my conclusion that London/England are awful places to live, and that English people are still awful. And every time I visited I was told how much better the food had become, only to find it was still as awful as I remember (my father was Italian, and a great cook, so the food I ate at home was always very good).

Oh, and the weather is awful too. Few things give me more pleasure than complaining to Brits that here in Los Angeles I have to suffer through more than 300 days of sunshine a year.
