I remember around 2010 there was huge traffic on toplist sites.
TOP.MYWAP.EU - WAP TOPLIST.
But not many left, hard to find now.

This is a toplist. The numbers on the right show the hits the sites sent in and the hits the toplist sent out. They died I guess because it's easy to spoof them to get your site to the top of the list and cream off all the best traffic.Comment

I still have a few top lists, but it is not just that fewer webmasters use them or the older software is harder to maintain and can be gamed.
The biggest issue with them is just that surfers do not surf that way any more. Looking through lists of banners for what to click is not really a thing any more.Comment

My sense is that over 15 years ago, Google stopped really counting script links as backlinks. Like i never noticed any of my top sites getting tons of search traffic, but banner exchanges used to be great for backlinks. Affiliate program links don't seem to really count either.
I might just not know how to get the SERPS to view those types of links as backlinks. I am not awesome at SEO in 2019.Comment

Yes you are right, i think that one was one of reasons why TGP/MGP sites tanked as their backlinks was not really backlinks but mostly trade links. There is option to generate cleans link and count clicks by putting JS on each link, but very little sites used such approach.Comment

I think it might depend on the script. When I start adding trades to a site on a regular basis, I often see a significant rise in SE traffic soon follows. The only factors that have changed are additional scripted links pointing to my sites, and a rise in overall (traded) traffic.

I wish more people would make old style toplists. They may not gain much traffic themselves, but if you get a link from them they can really help a content site gain se.
The problem with the porn dude type sites, they are only interested in large trades. Whereas old style toplist trades could list with 1 unique or more per day. So if you are building new sites it was a great option to get them going.Comment

I doubt they're beneficial any longer. I used to use them at one point in time. I never really noticed any huge spike in traffic. I actually used to do very well with adult forums back in the day, but these days, they're just flooded with automated bots, or either links that lead to services where you need to pay to download complete sets.Comment

I used to love the banner top lists as we had our referral links page linking to social media, so anyone just flirting from aff and other sites like that, 1000´s of hits a day would land on our links, follow through to the top list & in reverse, we´d get to the top with our older sites like arsewithclass, adult-excitement & pleasureville, direct to the tour.
This way, I wasn´t linking to my tour for the fans of social media but they would still come to my tour by hitting the main text link at the bottom of the page anyway

Toplists were great IMO. I could start a new site and register it on about 100+ toplists I had bookmarked. Then feed my site bought traffic so I could generate hits.
Within about a week I would start to appear on the toplists and traffic would increase from there. It was a much better option then what we currently have.Comment

The original reason I asked, was because I have (what I think) is a great domain for a toplist, or some kind of list anyway.
I'm not particularly interested in another cookie-cutter "pornlist". I see so many of them out there using the same little icons. I have my doubts that they get much production since there are so many.Comment
