Sponsors, you should change your payout rules

let's calculate! if webmaster earned $90 per sponsor, on 20 sponsors that's $1800! well, that's mean I couldn't get my money because your minimum payout is $100! sometimes I need every buck, so set it up on $50

      Reality:

Many (but not all) sponsors want you to not get paid like this. They want the guy who only sends a couple of sign ups, or only one sign up, to not reach his payout point. That means they get more spendable money right NOW and can deal with you LATER, if at all.

Think about how many small webmasters only send a sale or two and never collect. That adds up to quite a bit over the course of time.

Another problem I've encountered is that often a small company will go out of business before paying out. Generally I won't deal with smaller companies unless they're hooked up with CCBill.

For what, not meeting the program's stated terms?

Each sponsor has their own set of rules. Play by them or promote another sponsor who is better suited for your needs.

Sponsors should have a $0 payout minimum option. If they charge a $2 fee on epass payouts for example, there's no reason for them not to do it.

And so on and so on. As long as they have good sites and treat members right I'm in. It's affiliates making sales that keep them in business. Not sure about you but I generally don't support the guys with 100's of outsourced workers trying to overpower my sites and traffic

from a sponsor's standpoint, upping the minimum payout to $100 helps deal with scammers (and there are a lot of them!) with stolen card info that set up an account, get one signup, get their one-time PPS, and then they disappear with the money and we're stuck dealing with the inevitable charge back BS. I understand it can be frustrating to have $85 sitting somewhere, but there is more than one side to it.
I also don't think it is fair to assume sponsors do it just to hold onto some cash and screw their affiliates. Not saying every sponsor is beyond reproach, but from personal experience, whenever there is an issue with an affiliate payout, I stroll over to accounting and it is made a priority to get it resolved.

Why in gods name would they do that? It's not uncommon for a business to have terms for payment: COD, ROG, Net15, Net30, Net90, etc. Mostly based on the cashflow of the business and reasonable market conditions. Most business have minimum orders for resellers, where in the affiliate game there is normally ZERO qualifications or sales expectations to be an affiliate.

There's a delay in having credit card processor payment settle in their accounts, payment for content, processing fees, hosting, programmers, equipment and the many other things that programs deal with. And typically for less than 50% net of the initial sale.

Then there's the scammers, who are typically the ones that inquire about payments before they are due.

Yet there's still those that bitch. Incredible.

if its epass, its not problem to reach the limit on year or later ... some programs are sending me payments every pay period, some once per year. one day i receive 10 epass payments, one day no payment ... i do not have problems with waiting. and i will wait with some pronsors, cause where are only checks i always setup 300usd limit cause of high fees in my country. but better to get 300 in five years than do not keep the link on my sites

As a sponsor, DrChango is right... When you see someone send 6 joins and 6 paid and then no more traffic or signups... It's easy to see what's going on. We can either just sit back and wait for the charge backs, or cancel these out. The min. help combat this.

We absolutely want affiliates to make money. That's our life blood. And that's why they actually make most of the rev.

This isn't about a delay in payouts, there's nothing wrong with holding the money for X number of days as long as X is a reasonable number and is clearly stated in advance.

This is about sponsors holding money an affiliate has earned longer than is necessary.

If a sponsor charges an affiliate $2 for an epass payout, then what reason could that sponsor have for not paying the affiliate (once the sponsor has the money in his account)?

Why not drop the payout minimum to $0 and delay the first payment for 90 days? That way you keep the small affiliates happy and catch the scammers that send more than one fake signup.

Would you really promote a program that wouldn't send you your first payment for 3 whole months? Maybe you would since you suggested it, but I bet a lot of other affiliates would opt to promote a program that would send the money much sooner even if there was a minimum.

Our minimum payout is $50 which I think is pretty reasonable. I can count the requests I get to cash out below $50 on one hand anyhow.

I was thinking earlier that minimum payouts must add a little to the bottom line - if not interest earned on pending funds then at least some breathing space with cashflow.

Imagine the level of "unused" funds an online micropayment processor has? How about a prepaid photocopier card? Some people probably make a couple of copies then forget about it, so the remaining balance never gets used. Great business model.

3-6 Months is when chargebacks start coming in...
Some are faster, and some are longer.

Listen, most sponsors will work with you, I think.

When I signup to promote a sponsor I always pick $100 or higher. I hate dealing with all the litle checks.

Someone said, use ccbill then, get them all on one check.

Or, send more traffic, to reach that $100, ha.

If your not reaching your $100 in say 3 months, you probably should be closing that account and placing your traffic some where else!!!

Gift vouchers with a $ value are another good scam... they expire after 12 months and the retailer retains all remaining funds.

I'd rather promote a program with a 3 month delay than some of the programs with $200 or even $500 payout minimums. My point was that a minimum payout is not an effective way to deal with fraud, if that is what some sponsors are worried about.

Minimum payouts that required more than 2 "normal" sales kept me from joining probably dozens of sponsors back when I shopped around for sponsors to push. Personal choice of course, but I wont push anything that tries to require me to make 4 or 5 sales before I can buy some groceries.

That's when you need the smaller payout...

I tried a webcam program (bigcashcrew) and had absolutely shocking conversions - I made $50 from traffic that would have normally generated at least a few hundred bucks elsewhere. Ok, so it wasn't working, I stopped sending traffic and asked for a payout. It was more than 4 months before they finally paid me, and that was after a LOT of emails and broken promises. In the end the payout wasn't worth the time I spent chasing it up. Left a very bad taste in my mouth.

Actually, there are legal reasons for that. A gift voucher with a $ value and no expiration date would be considered a form of money. And since private companies (except for the Federal Reserve) are not allowed to print their own money...

How about prepaid CCs? I've been playing with one and its T&C clearly state that the termination fee is charged on the last day of the expiry month listed on the card - it is equal to the remaining balance.

So if you've got $3k loaded onto the card and it expires, they charge you $3k termination fee.

Tell me that isn't a scam.....

If you send sales to a program and dont make the min for the payout but are not promoting them any longer or they are not converting any longer, simply contact them, ask for a payout and that the account be closed.

Affiliate fraud is getting so bad that a lot of programs (like mine) are no longer taking affiliates. One out of every new affiliate was turning out to be a scamming carder who would send a couple of sales get paid and then sting ya. Having a higher min payout give you more data to go on and longer to discover the fraud, so you are going to see more of this.

I would like to see sponsors at very least reconcile the books or whatever at the end of the year and clear off any people owed money. As others have stated before that sometimes you just can not convert someone and throwing more traffic at them to reach the minimum just would be a waste of cash. I know people say contact them or whatever, but honestly there are a whole lot of them who just will not pay out, give you the run around, or generally be a dick about it.

I also know in most situations at least in the US. If you leave money or are owed money in some account after a set period of time, it eventually ends up paid or sent to unclaimed property. Not so with such companies though.

Maybe you would since you suggested it, but I bet a lot of other affiliates would opt to promote a program that would send the money much sooner even if there was a minimum.
Solution is simple. This solution would satisfy both small honest affiliates and sponsors trying to avoid fraud. That is - combine the two models:

Have your regular min payout of 100$ or whatever AND add the opportunity to get paid less (what U-bob suggested), but if affiliate wants that he/she should wait 90 days.

                                                                                    Comment

I believe Google Adsense triggers an end-of-year default payout if there have been none sent during the year. For smaller companies the aggregate amount of "below minimum payout" funds all sent out at the same time would probably be a big hit to cashflow.

But still it can be a pisser so I have given the "stuck in a rut" sponsor a predominant link on a page, then blasted it with broker traffic or better yet ppc until it cracks $100. Usually before another $30 is spent.

I would worry about too much time going by rather than not eventually getting the one more sign up. Sometimes when too much time goes by you have to write accounting. And don't you hate when that happens.

Have your regular min payout of 100$ or whatever AND add the opportunity to get paid less (what U-bob suggested), but if affiliate wants that he/she should wait 90 days.
                                                                                                  sounds good to me
