It's a great idea but will the Senate pass it?

Why would it be a bad idea? It won't pass the Senate and even if it does Trump said he would veto it..

FYI Comcast just quietly launched tiered data by trying to sell faster access to gamers. Something they claimed they wouldn't do, but everyone with a brain knows that was the entire purpose of ending net neutrality.

I believe the dem's know the senate will not pass it and are trying to provide some contrast before the election. Probably see more of it.

I think it should be mandatory that any bill have a chance for a vote in 90 days or less.
Or at least a vote to table it beyond 60 days. Often they have similar legislation and they hold some over others but that has gone beyond what has been intended with no floor vote or consideration.
This allows them to say one thing and not taking credit for not believing in what they say. The public really does not know what they truly stand for.
How do you hold them accountable like that.

No...because it's something the people want. Republicans don't want what the people want. They want whatever their donors want.

I have no doubt that the Dems are planning to use this as contrast if it doesn't either get a vote or doesn't pass the Senate. Net Neutrality is mostly a younger person's issue so they will want to use this as a way to motivate younger voters.

Those that are not for it (less the actual details of the legislation) do not understand how this will impact their lives.
I know I have given plenty of examples every time I hear those speaking against it and find they do not really understand it's impact to them directly or indirectly. Even those here that are suppose to be webmasters.

To much talk in generalities lead to miscommunication and misunderstanding of the facts and that bad/poor information spreads. It's a easy target for the large ISP's to attack and subdue.

In simple terms without details, you should just say that if you sell content that requires broadband, you could be limited against your major (richer) competitors as newer, more demanding bandwidth is required in future formats.
They do not want to clip the rate you now enjoy is correct when they say that.
This is about the future and future formats that compete with cable.
(not limited to) 4K, 8K + VR and other virtual formats.

The interesting thing is when I talk to my friends who are my age, about 90% of them either haven't heard of net neutrality or they don't know what it is or care. Of those that have heard of it, most of them aren't sure why it is a big deal.

I typically ask people if they want their phone data or internet access to start being like cable. You pay one price for general stuff. If you want access to other sites, you have to pay an additional fee. Want to play games online, another fee and so on. Another issue is that at least 30% of the people in this country only have one ISP to choose from so if that ISP started charging more/throttling etc, they can't even switch.

Yes, but the problem is, they are not going to throttle you any more/less than now. Consumers issues will be the site that has the content they want in the future, like 4KVR will play like a herky jerky dial up connection.

So webmasters here need to worry about being able to distribute the next gen of video content without having a surcharge to stream it glitch free to the user.
If you have a lot of streams, you would be a target.
It's about how much of your content (bandwidth somewhat) can be carried on a ISP as a sum total in a instance without a surcharge.

So a site with 1000 continuous streams of 1080p may be equal to 150 4KVR streams but that is your cap (whatever number that is) and if you exceed that, your users will suffer unless you pay more. So, you suffer.

Comcast and other ISP's devised this as a way to make money on their loosing share of the content market which they own a healthy percentage of.
Their current biz model will not support just being a pipe provider. And they knew this day was coming over 12 years ago.

In fact, the top 3 ISP's own 85% of the content market. Comcast wanted to be able to charge google and others they felt were getting a free ride on their network back in 2005.
That is where the push was in to the GW bush FCC relinquishing control of the internet came from.

But the internet is not their network. They either want to 'resell' it as is or they don't.
They want to be a middle man and more. Nobody/Co should have that much power of what connects us. They should be neutral.... just a pipe.

Notice very few places do Verizon and Comcast service areas overlap with broadband... not by chance. They only way to keep some sanity in what is transforming now is to force some competition. Comcast has purchased exclusive pole rights (right away line rights) from all the local municipalities over the last 8 years. To my knowledge, this has not been challenged in court yet as monopolistic activity. It would have to be challenged by a big ISP. It just stops some other provider start-up from giving them a run for their money.

Now finally, there is a new player on the block and that is 5G wireless. But the rules allow cellular more flexibility in charging/limiting for heavy users and even fully metered service if they choose.
But that is not really competition. But it will have some impact on a lot of services for those that can afford it. And it may take 7 more years for that to roll out to 50% of the population no matter how much hyped it is now.

Going to guess you don't make money by delivering content.
But, if we get net neutrality in the future, you are free to cap the bandwidth of your streams to comply with what the internet pipe providers advise and pay more to exceed it.

He doesn't care that net neutrality can create an adult stream surcharge, or even refuse to stream adult content with various carriers like Verizon, etc. He's pro 1% and multi-national billion dollar corporation dominance online.

It was never a flaw before because we had two parties that for the most part respected our Democracy and our Constitution for "the most part".. At least the very core and basic stuff..

However in the last 20 years the Republican party has gone deeper and deeper over the edge of authoritarian rule. Trump has radicalized them faster than it's ever happened before. They have a problem, they wont change their racist bigoted polices to cater to modern times instead they want to force their mentality on the mass. The problem is there are very few of them and they are greatly over represented in our govt because of years of cheating our system at state levels.. They are moving trying to fast forward overthrowing our govt because they will never again have a majority. (they haven't had a majority of the voters since at least Reagan, they've only won by rigging the system since then)

If you asked me 5 years ago if America would possibly have to fight it's self to stop a dictatorship I'd say hell no.. However it's very clear that in the last 2 years Republicans are doing everything possible to destroy our rule of law and democracy so they can seize power because this is the last shot they have and they know it..

He's not a judge he's not elected by the people but he thinks because he's the Attorney General he can do anything he wants because he knows Republicans in the Senate will ok anything as will Trump. Meaning 3 of the checks in our system are now corrupted by Republicans trying to push authoritarian rule.

We have checks and balances that's how our system works.. The WH, the Senate, the House , the judiciary branch.. each side is supposed to work independently of each other to keep things in check so no single part of the govt can overrule the people's will.

The problem is Republicans have the WH, Senate and Trump has installed lobbyist in his cabinet positions who are doing the bidding of their corporate masters.

The check to that is Congress and the judiciary branch is the check to a unhinged WH..

The problem is the Senate is now acting as the arm of the WH accepting anything the WH wants. They are no longer a check because they are pushing toward authoritarianism.

This leaves only the House as the sole check to put the entire system in balance which is something the House alone can not do.

Further more Republican stole a supreme court pick from Obama by refusing to even vote on any of Obama's picks. This was again McConnell.. So now the SC is now stacked by a party that doesn't even have a majority representation of voters in this country. This was a big deal and quite honestly it should have led to riots in the streets because this was a very big red sign of future danger, but 'the people" have become complaisant more worried about their iphones than their govt..

Again our system was built to work based on the assumption that the people would hold the leaders accountable for their actions but what Republicans did was a very slow coup of our govt starting at state level and rigging elections with illegal gerrymandering which helped them take control of states that then led to federal level control..

The problem is the people didn't pay attention because it happened over the last 20 years and now everything is happening fast because they have a president who wants to be the next Hitler..

It's a working system and probably the best democracy model in the world but the people have to pay attention and sadly we did not.

They rigged state elections and people like me had our votes thrown out in Florida because our state election was rigged. Been one of my largest pet peeve's for a long time.
Congress has made itself incapable of taking a stand for anything. Only against.
The contorting of the rules of the house and senate has allowed the minority party to rule by being against everything.

I vote for my congressman/senator to propose, argue, bargain and pass legislation. To me, these type of actions are unconstitutional. I can understand a delay of up to 90 days on proposed legislation, but everything deserves a vote, even if to table it for later.

Then the folks can answer for their actions, and not mere words. That is the heart of it.
It makes me question if we still live in a democracy just looking at it.

Get back the rules as they were, and a filibuster should require standing on the floor and talking, not a mere mentioning that they filibuster it.
Then make it take 3/4 majority to change the rules. This would protect both parties and independents.

Here is how much power the leader of the Senate has. In early 2016 a seat came open on the Supreme Court. Obama made his nomination to fill that seat and the leader of the Senate, McConnell, just flat out told the President that they would simply not be even considering his nominee until after the election. He then bragged about how telling Obama he wasn't going to get to fill that seat was one of the highlights of his life.

One guy decided the President doesn't get to fill a vacant Supreme Court seat and there was nothing that anyone could do about it.

It's pure insanity.

A quick fix would be a up or down vote in 90 days or his nomination and acceptance is automatic.
But even that has it's problems. Some poor nominee's might not be voted on so nobody can be blamed. So perhaps after 90 days the House should be able to accept the responsibility.

There is a counter to the stacked court issue if Democrats regain the Senate & WH. More seats can be added to the supreme court.. The number has never been consistent like it has been most recently.. We've had as many as 10 judges at one time on the SC.

Meaning this problem can be fixed, but Dem's have to take back control.

IMO 9 judges seems like the right number to me. this way there is a odd number so no even decisions and 9 would be quite hard for either side to stack the court..

Although to be quite honest I think political affiliation to judges should be illegal. We should move away from the party non sense with judges and president naming the judges.

Actually More people voted for Democrats in every election since Reagan.. The only reason Republicans are holding so much power is because they've illegally gerrymandered states for a very long time. They've created laws to stop people from being able to vote. They've closed the polling stations in places that have lots of Democrats making it harder for those Democrats in their states to vote..

This isn't a case of people voting for them as it is more so the people's will has been stolen from them by corrupt politicians. The people have not stood up for their rights in mass hence the reason Republicans are getting away with this.

Something like this is needed. Sure, some candidates might take longer to look into, but there should be some process in place that starts things moving along and forces people to actually do their job by interviewing, investigating, then voting on the candidates not just waiting a year to see how they feel then.

Democrats have tried to push bills that require all bills/nominees to be voted on and not blocked by one guy, but Republican's have blocked those bills every single time..

Democrats have tried to fix these problem when it became apparent what Republicans were doing but Republican's have blocked all attempts to fix our system because then they couldn't cheat our system..

Again Democrats are working to fix the issue of the Electoral College being rigged. Many states have signed laws to abolish the EC but it requires X about of states to make it work.




Democrats are trying to fix this situation but Republicans are doing everything possible to stop it..

Pretty much every single piece of major legislation that has EVER been passed in distant memory has the EXACT opposite effect of it's name... Affordable Health Care anyone? Patriot Act?

I would agree and always state depending on the 'wording' of legislation.
The wording happens well after the legislation is passed in a sub-committee and that is where politicians sell the wording.
A simple tweak of one word can give advantage or disadvantage to you or a competitor. It can make you qualify for tax breaks or avoid regulation.

And nobody is paying any attention to it. And they make it complex for a reason. You will never understand it unless you are good at reading legal language.
Some of the media report on it, but nobody is reading or believing it on page 10.
