I thought the real problem here was that she did some commercials after the pageant for a religious group whose agenda is to stop gay marriage. And she is supposed to be representing the pageant as Miss California for an entire year per a contract she signed.
So yes, it is Donald Trump's business. For the next year she is a representative for HIM. And to have that religious group use her on their ads without his permission was grounds for termination of her title.
Trump just played it up a bit for publicity (like a good businessman should), and then compassionately let her slide.
That was what really happened with her today. Not the answer she gave at the pageant itself. But her actions in letting herself be used by religious zealots since then while representing herself as "Miss California"
Heard some audio footage of her today on CNN where she says that "Satan" tried to tempt her at the pageant, but "God" helped her to give the "right" answer.

"Freedom of speech" is often used as a catchall phrase that encompasses all such times when someone voices their opinion, in this case one that was ASKED for, and then is subsequently persecuted or otherwise penalized for said opinion.
Others have a right to disagree with her, certainly, but you're not the ones now being raked over the coals for your point of view. She is.
I don't necessarily agree with everything she had to say but I think she's got some decent sized balls to say want she said and now sticking to her guns in the face of this rather ridiculous shitstorm so many people and the media are wagering against her.

In one sense I agree with you. I am personally VERY TURNED OFF by the thought of homosexual sex. But I have had lots of gay friends and they are some of the nicest people I know. They knew about my views but weren't offended; they felt the same way about heterosexual sex. It is OK to think that homosexual sex is wrong, but that is where it needs to end -- with you. The reason I detest the religious right so much is that they go out of their way to lobby the government to deny same sex couples the same rights they enjoy. What two people do in the privacy of their own bedroom is NONE OF MY FUCKING BUSINESS. It is not for me to tell others what to do with their lives. It pisses me off that right wing groups are so up in arms about hate crimes legislation. They claim it will permit the government to prosecute them for speaking out against homosexuality from the pulpit. They say gays don't NEED extra protection. When I was in grad school, one of my gay friends left a gay bar alone and was pulled over by two rednecks who followed him. They proceeded to bash his skull in and send him to the hospital.
