Question: How can I distribute video over wifi?

Here's what I want to do.

    1. Using an old computer as a server I want to set up to broadcast an open wifi network that anyone can log into.

    2. When anyone logs into the network they immediately (and automatically) receive a video stream and nothing else. They would have zero access to the rest of the computer.

I can handle the 1st part but I'm clueless on how the 2nd part can be done. Is there a product, script, etc. that I can download? Or some other alternative?

You need to create a captive portal so that when people click to access your free public Wi-Fi network they're forwarded to a web page where you have an embedded video playing.

Hotels create an active portal to forward people who click on their free public WiFi to be forwarded to a login webpage.

Yes, without time for all the big details, check out ddwrt firmware for routers. There is a option for distributing wifi service.
When you control the DNS, you control everything. Everything points to your stream/page.

But you might also look at options for running a VLC 'SERVER' for something more deluxe.

I did all of it about 12 years ago so I know it works if you want to put the time in creating it. Allow a bit longer if you are green to the tech. but I'll bet there are plenty of how-2 pages/video now a days.

BTW... you will want more than one router on separate RF channels for best results of multi users. 5ghz works best. 2.4 can be easily interfered with from microwave ovens to portable phones and baby cams.

        ^^^^ This.

That web page can also be a self-hosted page that runs on your own local machine. If you want to share videos to only those on your wifi, this is probably the easiest way.

Thanks for the information and I'll check out the VLC server.

                Butt fucking ugly sells.

However I'm willing to consider removing it if you never post another political thread.

Plus I've got a nice fat modern hippie broad that would look good in my sig.

My American friends are worth more to me than my own personal disgust at your gross pictures.
