                  Drew,

You would definately be forgiven for thinking we don't use the Euro here Everything is still billed in UK Pounds Sterling as you pointed out. A wild guess at this, but I would say less than 1% of business/shops in this country provide the option to pay in Euros.... in fact I haven't found anywhere that does accept Euros and I live here. We have NOT adopted the Euro as appose to sterling as of yet.... but, I should imagine we will at some point. There are things for it and against it.

When tourist places in Europe switched to the Euro, the prices went up. Food and beer are more expensive now under the Euro compared to the old currencies.

Don't know if your country is the same.... on paper our unemployment figures show to be 3.1%, but that translates to people who are receiving state benefit. Our government comes out with crafty bullshit schemes such as training allowances which reclassifies unemployed peoples as trainees etc. Most governments work the same way and introduce bullshit schemes to falsify figures.

I'm not even going down the immigration path with this thread.....We've got as many problems as the next country. It would be nice to emigrate but it might be bit hard finding somewhere with a stable economy and isn't on someones nuke list!

We've had VAT or sales tax for as long as I can remember.... It increased to 17.5% a few years ago and prices went up yes.... what the hell as that got do with changing from one currency to another?

When you switched to Euro did you suddenly add another 2.5% on in VAT/sales tax? NO! You simply started rounding your profits up another 2.5% instead..... You forget our government gets the VAT, not the shop owner.

I will answer to this quote only but at first reading I saw a couple of similar questions thrown at me ("grow up" from theking and someone else).

Listen guys, you don't know shit about my personal opinions with this issue. If you read my post carefully, you will see that I made assumptions and then concluded a theory that both countiries have the right to attack each other. I think the argument is open to debate, but if I and anyone else was always on the side of USA, there wouldn't be any debates - because that's how subjective some people around here seem to be.

Now making assumptions and from there concluding an argument is a standard approach in science and philosophy and anywhere where you need to make hypothesis.

I understand it is hard for some people to stay objectice, but for the record, and it seems I need to put this note for the record every now and then, I find it entertaining how easily Americans get provoked and then start flaming me or someone else personally.

Yeah, VAT was introduced in 1973 here... after the Netherlands in 1969, France in 1970 and Belgium in 1971 and the VAT rate across europe varied.... in fact pornographic books in France were charged VAT at 33.3% the same as any other luxury goods in France. I can't understand how you can compare price rises under VAT when the VAT percentage goes to the government and a currency change where shop owners price fixed and increased their own profits. In the UK, there are still on only 33% in favour of the Euro.

See the BBC news article about this........
                                Germany Investigates EURO Price hike...

                                This quote is interesting...
It (Germany) has rejected calls to follow the example of some other countries - such as France and Austria - where euro-linked price rises are illegal.
I should imagine in this country it would be illegal too.....so no, I can't see us rounding off if/when we adopt the Euro... we have enough problems with shops raising their prices for the fun of it

The differences between Iraq and North Korea are staggering. Someone earlier had said that we don't give a fuck about North Korea, but yet we take an active interest in Iraq's oil. Bullshit.

The US has been active in Korea since the 1950's. Since then we have kept US troops stationed there in great numbers. The US troops are there by direct request of the South Koren Government. Our intention there is not to overun the North Korea or to replace their govenment; Our intention there is to keep the peace (at great expense to the US I might add).

At the same time the US provides billions of dollars a year in aid to North Korea.

Don't ever say that we want Iraq's oil but have no interest in North Korea. We have a huge fifty year stake in North Korea and protecting South Korea.

And if I recall correctly, the US wasn't the only country in involved in Korea. All of Europe, and China, and Russia was directly involved in the Korean War.

The difference between Iraq and North Korea is huge.
                                              - Iraq has started wars without any legal basis, including Iran and Kuwait.
                                              - Iraq has weapons of mass destructions, and has used them agaist member's of it's own country.
                                              - Iraq fires on the US and English planes on a nearly daily basis.

Take a look at US history for the past 100 years and tell me we are wrong. Our biggest threats are now our closest allies. Germany is a good example. The US went to bat for all of Europe in WWII against Germany; Now the US and Germany are allies. Same with Japan. Japan attacked the US for - surprise - oil. Now Japan is a close ally with the US and is doing rather well.

The US more or less destroyed these countries in battle, then rebuilt them, and then continued to be friends with them.

The US needs to do the same with Iraq. We need to take down their goverment, and rebuild Iraq into an International country that can sit at the table.

*I can't understand how you can compare price rises under VAT when the VAT percentage goes to the government*

The 7.5% VAT (when it was first introduced) may go to the govt but princes were just rounded to 10% more cos we felt likt it at the time! *g*... Kinda covered the admin for being the govt's bookkeepers!

I was in "adult" in the UK since before VAT was introduced and another 20 something years listening to VAT rulings *g* then spent many 1000's pounds having "wrangles" with em - even to the level of the Euro court (we won*g*.. but never seen the benefit much - tho it was worth the effort and cleared the path for others in the same position). For some other companies that were worth millions, they unfortunately were wiped out in the years it took us to get a hearing/ruling in the Euro court.

*I should imagine in this country it would be illegal too.....so no, I can't see us rounding off if/when we adopt the Euro*

Dammit! *g*... There ain't going to be a profit in changing currencies next? :-) Shit.. the world's getting too tight-assed about "free enterprise" these days *lol*

I've not keep up with the Euro "acceptance" - but surprised even 30% want to adopt it as a national currency!

*International law? Nice concept. "Laws" are only "laws" if someone is willing and able to enforce them. *

International law is more than a "concept" - it is formulated for the protection of others, trade blah... There are some who find it hard to accept an "external" law, depending on the "doctrine" or perhaps a feeling they are above it - but fortunately laws are still the basis of a sane society unless they are smothered with em.

I got not one bit of "sympathy" for Saddam but can also see the attitude of the Iraq people (don't understand it tho!) when others invade their air space. Tis same with US Admin in the acceptance of the International Criminal Court.. why try (very hard!*g*) to find reasons to reject it? US probably had most to gain - but reckon they just wanted the freedom to act out the wild west and protect others within US territory that may be of interest to an ICC.

But.. gotta agree with ya on laws are valid only if enforced! Then we reach the point of who may take it upon themselves to enforce em *lol*
