1st fucked up experience with Godaddy

I know I was warned on this board, but today I had my 1st bad experience with godaddy. I must get 50 emails a week from godaddy...about renewals etc. Well the last time I spoke to my account rep he said I have multiple chances to renew my domains even after they have expired. Well today when I went to renew one that I had originally decided to let expire, it was no longer in my account...although I am still in the whois database.

Now they tell me their poilcy is that you have 18 days to renew....why the fuck did they not specify this when I had spoken to my account rep several times. My reps big thing was trying to get me to give him my cc # and a list of domains that he would renew for me...at a discount. But the discount was no better then the coupon discounts...and I don't trust any fucker with my cc#.

The domain in question had expired on April 12th, 2009, but I was unable to renew now, but I have at least 100 that I am still able to renew that have expired even longer ago. So after digging deeper and searching online...it seems that if someone has backordered the domain...then they stick to their 18 day policy...but if no one back orders it or shows interest the domain sticks around in your account...and they send you another 100 emails to renew it. So the rep on the phone says oh I can still get the domain for you, but it would be $80 since it is in the redeption period now. I said fuck you, it ant work that much to me.

What does moniker do in situations like this...since most here told me to use them for my domain portfolio.

          ouch that sucks!

I've never had issues with them and only like 25% of my domains are with them.. The only real problems I've ever had was with getting domains out of registerfly when they went under and locked accounts so you couldn't move them

I understand that I should have renewed by a certain date, but they should just remove all my domains the same way...by a certain time. I have been renewing the same way for years...now they mention this 18 day rule. They should remove all the domains then after the 18 day rule then. The inconsistancy is what is fucked up in my opinion.

seriously. you are getting upset because YOU let a domain expire and you are mad it is not available 18+ days after you let it expire.

You fucked up. Live with it.

Why the fuck would any business hold on to something that you are not paying
for when someone else is ready willing and able to pay for it?

If a domain is not back ordered then it is still "available" when you try to renew it. Therefore why would they not renew that domain?

                Nothing fishy going on here.

Basically you are a fucking idiot who tries to blame other people for your total
lack of attention to your personal affairs.

haha I love these responses! I was trying to be nice with my post before but it is true that the only one to blame is you for letting it expire and not renewing it in the time they state regardless of what they do or have done with other cases..

bottom line is if no one else wants your expired name sure they are going to sell it back to you but to think they should have to sit on a domain for 6 mos incase you want it back is stupid

This is why most of the people that whine about GoDaddy whine about them. They make a mistake and can't accept the responsibility for their error.

                        Not exactly GoDaddy's fault.

                          Okay, point taken guys.

After checking my domains a total of 5 that I would have kept were lost by my mismanagement. I will try and keep a month ahead from now on.

I should have realized that they are worth something since I received a couple of thousand hits just from domain tools whois.

Just a guess, but perhaps those domains disappeared more quickly because they were backordered at goddaddy. It would be in the registrar's best interests to hold on to the domain for as long as possible after it expires, so that (a) the original owner might renew (and possibly pay a redemption fee) or (b) someone else might buy it... if neither happens then it drops and they make nothing further.

One of the domains lost was AsianXXXFetish [dot] com , should I pay the $80 to get it back? Do think it is worth it, I was borderline on this one since I have a lot of domains. But as you read above this was one of the domains I would have renewed yesterday.

Only you can decide that. Does it have a site that makes you money? If not, I would let it drop.

the domain by itself is not worth anything

chances are if you let it drop, they will eventually put it up for auction where you will possibly be able to get it in the $10 to $20 range imho

you can also check their auctions, maybe that way you can get the domain back for 17,99?

It is not there, someone had backordered it with godaddy...once you don't renew within the 18 days after it is expired...it then goes through a redemption period...and then I think it goes to the person who back ordered it for $18.99 and I think you also have to pay the normal purchase fee also. Either way godaddy makes money.

It is my fault...but I just got pissed by the inconsistancy of the way they handle the expired domains...and why the fuck they give me a VIP rep, and never let me know about the 18 day rule...a quote from him "you have several attempts to renew...bla bla..bla".

there are worse. i had a domain removed from my account less than 2 weeks after it expired. i went to renew it the other day and it was gone. the company picks and chooses which names to take early. i won't be able to expose them until i get the domain back and have moved all other domains to another registrar.

I emailed my VIP rep at Gdaddy, he got my domain back and he waived the redemption fee...and renewed it at my discount. If he comes to NYC I owe him dinner.

Godaddy is still great in my book since we got over this issue.

Would it be pushing my luck to ask him to get a name I missed 2 months ago and someone has it now.

Perhaps I'm in the minority here, but we've been with Enom for about 7 or 8 years now and I love them. They auto-renew if you have it set, if you don't, they start sending notices a couple months in advance of renewal date, and if a domain does expire, you have at least 30 days after expiration to renew without penalty. After that, most domains go into extended renewal, which means you can still renew at a higher cost ($100 or $150 or something.)

I have never lost a domain with Enom, have always had extraordinary service from them, and, unlike GoDaddy, they don't make you go through 500 pages of bullshit you don't want when you register a domain. They are a little more expensive than GoDaddy, but As long as you have a reasonable volume of names, it's pretty close in price... and peace of mind is worth a hell of a lot to me.

The other thing is... GoDaddy is notorious for their secret extra fees and shady practices. They decide you're spamming, they lock your domain and charge you $150 or something to get it back. You change any of your contact information when you renew, and they will not let you transfer your name for 60 days. And they've done various other shady things.

I'm sure they're great for some people, but I've just always felt more comfortable with Enom.

But if moniker had better marketing I might have started with them, but I am kind of addicted to godaddy. With moniker you are able to post your names in their snapnames database for sale and auctions. Domainers scan these names daily so you would have a better chance of selling them. I have a ton I am trying to sell in the GFY buy and sell....and no ones buying these days.

the thing with selling any domains on any site, you need to promote them yourself anyways (unless we are talking premium)..... don't expect to list a bunch of half crappy domains anywhere and make any sales, there are so many 100's of thousands of domains for sale that potential buyers will hardly have a chance to notice yours unless you somehow draw attention to them

also, don't put $50 price tags on $10 domain names or you will just be wasting your time

for cheaper domains buyers tend to like a realistic "buy it now" price so they can grab it if they like it with no hassles, auctions tend to only work if your domain is truly worth more AND you can promote it some way to actually get some interested buyers looking at it

also remember that after a sale it tends to take about a month to finish a transaction and get paid, so don't expect to do this and have your money tomorrow... for that you are better off dealing with people you know on a forum person to person

that's about all the advice I can think of right now, maybe someone else can comment on their experience
