Actually Jane it is genically a new variation of H1N1 swine flu.
Just like the Spanish FLu was its own genetic variation of H1N1 swine flu
And yes the deadly flu outbreak in 1976 in the US was also a different variation of H1N1 flu virus

I'm now officially offended that Spanish Flu of 1918 is not called swine flu as it should have been called.

The sad thing is people are making such a big deal of this. They said SARS was going to get us a few years back and it never did. You have a better chance of getting hit by a car then getting the Swine Flu. What a paranoid world we live in.

FYI It may be a new version but it is still the Swine Flu. The CDC has been studying different versions of this flu for years. There are some good articles to read on it.
