        It seems like some of those who oppose same sex marriage aren't against gay marriage so much as they're against gayness in general. They appear to be afraid that they can encourage people to be gay. That is the stupidest thing. You can't encourage people to become gay and people who were married and had kids didn't become gay, they always were gay. I 100% support encouraging people who are gay to come out and be gay because I strongly oppose gay people marrying straight people, unless they're both fully aware of the situation.
        Here's how sexual orientation works. You're attracted to the characteristics of a particular gender, or maybe both. Sexual orientation goes even deeper than that, as anyone who's worked with any niche content will tell you. You can run advertisements for chicks stepping in dog food all day, but I'm still not going to be into it. Male characteristics, also not something I'm into. So there is no choice for me. I can't choose gay. I could go have sex with men all day long, but I'd just be a closet straight guy. If you seriously believe that it is a choice, and that you can choose to be gay, then you're at least a little bi if not gay. Otherwise it wouldn't be a choice for you.

        Some people don't care about this subject, as it doesn't apply to them. I can't be so detached. Even if I didn't have gay friends, I'd still care about this issue. If some oversensitive bitches get weirded out by whatever relationship that I'm consensually involved I'm fine. If they wanted to set up laws to discriminate against me and my significant other, I would be pissed off, and in a breaking bones kind of way. If you got to outlaw things because some oversensitive people were weirded out our entire industry would be illegal. If porn weirds people out, they can not watch it. If gay marriage weirds you out, you can not get gay married. However, having whiners try to force me out of the relationship of my choice isn't something that I find tolerable.

                                                                                                                                                                                a question to those who oppose adoption for gay couples: what if a lesbian couple decides to have a kid - will you take it away from them? or force them to do an abortion?

                                                                                                                                                                                i just saw something on TV today about a lesbian and a male couple to have a kid together. so one of the guys is the father and (logically) one of the women the mother. they live in 2 apartments in the same house. and the kid looked pretty happy with his 4 parents and a second kid is on the way. so who are we to tell them what they do is wrong?
                                                                                                                                                                                Kids don't care... as long as they are loved, they are happy. Sure, they might get some razzing, but that's natural for children... Even with a "normal" textbook nuclear family, kids will get razzed. Children don't look back and remember a messy house, all the little things, they remember the love and nurturing they recieved. Sounds like those guys have a great arrangement.

Your idea is to create a solution that can make everyone feel comfortable, which is idealistic but there are a couple of issues with it.

Civil unions as they are currently suggested in the US do not allow the full set of rights provided by Marriage. They would have to be enacted and enforced on a FEDERAL level and completely cover all the things that Marriage provides from a legal standpoint. Creating separate sets of law for 2 completely similar cases is fiscally wasteful, not to mention downright silly.

Even if there were no substantive differences in the way the law treated Marriages and Civil Unions, the fact that a Civil Union remains a separate status represents real and powerful inequality. We?ve been down this road before in this country and should not kid ourselves that a separate institution just for gay people is a just solution here either.

                                                                                                                                                                                    Get this:France currently offers both Civil Marriage and Civil Unions. France's Civil Union law was created in 1999 because gays were not allowed to marry, and they didn't want gays to be able to marry. Now, after 10 years, one third of all straight couples getting "hitched" in France opt for Civil Unions instead of Marriage. The number of Civil Unions has grown annually from 6,000 in the first year of the law to 140,000 in 2008 - with 92% of the civil unions last year involving straight couples.

                                                                                                                                                                                    Here's an idea:

                                                                                                                                                                                    <Find> Marriage <Replace with> Civil Union
                                                                                                                                                                                    and let the church provide official "marriages" complete with their own list of guidelines if they feel the need to alienate certain classes of people. Our government should NOT be in the business of citizen alienation.

                                                                                                                                                                                                you are saying "civil unions" don't do what we need to do.. but not saying "we need to modify civil unions so everyone is happy and we can put the issue behind us"

                                                                                                                                                                                                which also highlights the real issue and that's that the entire issue is NOT about "rights" at all. its about forcing others to accept a lifestyle as being the new norm which they are not willing to accept as such.
