Is there any reason we shouldnt be allowed to back up our DVDs to our computer?

Hollywood movie companies told a federal judge on Friday that RealNetworks violated copyright law by selling software that allows people to make backups of their DVDs on a home computer.

These companies are trying to limit technology and stop us from being able to catalog our movies in digital instead of boxes.
If RealNetworks wins, it could establish a beachhead for software that transfers movies from DVDs to hard drives, opening the door for many companies to sell devices that can store and organize movies from DVDs.

Id also like to point out the irony of Sony Pictures being part of this lawsuit.

Sony is who sued in 1976 over being allowed to record movies back in the Betamax case. They fought for VCRs to be able to record television shows etc, but now do not think you have the right to copy a DVD you already own?

    Read this carefully...

The legality of time-shifting programming in the United States was proven by a landmark court case of Universal Studios versus Sony Corporation (Sony v. Universal), when Sony argued successfully that the advent of its Betamax video recorder in 1976 did not violate the copyright of the owners of shows which it recorded.

    lol

so sony doesn't think a vcr copy is a copyright infringement, but a copy of a DVD on your compute is... even despite the fact, you put it there from your own DVD.

    IRONY?

just an note of interest, giant genetic engineering company Monsanto believes that when they sell a farmer a seed to grow a plant, that if that plant manages to pollinate the neighbor's farm a mile away because a bee carried the pollen, that they still own the rights to the genetics of that plant and therefore the innocent farmer that didn't ask for their pollen to be in his plants does not own the rights to his own plants anymore and is not allowed to save the seeds from it to grow more the next year

VCR Tapes wore out, and the quality was not as good as DVD.

All comes down to what they think will make them the most money, nothing else matters.

Other then reselling/redistribution, you should be able to use purchased content in anyway you want, copy backup w/e.
