Can't wait to vacation in Cuba!

My first big time spending vacation will be Cuba. I plan to spend over 20Gs for a month to live in luxury, fine food and good times.

Can't wait for Obama to lift the embargo.

I also plan to buy real estate in Cuba. I am looking most at commercial ports.

That will be crazy, and it'll mean that Cuban cigars will be legal? (for those who care)

You are aware that he can not really just lift the embargo as president. He could allow a bit more trading, more visits, more money able to be sent in - though he is only a president and needs congress to really lift anything or change to much.

It is pretty evident that he wants to set America's path on several issues and do so quickly (Iraq, Afghanistan, EPA, Cuba, Guantanamo, etc) it would be pretty unreasonable to expect much of it to change that fast. For instance I would think Cuba itself can and will take years if not a decade to really change to the status of most Latin American countries.

No one is stopping you from going there now man. Fly to Mexico or Canada, then goto Cuba. They won't stamp your passport. Don't bring anything home. Bam.

Been there a bunch of times.
Spending 20k just because you wish too will be hard there and there is really no reason too.
As far as buying up real estate Cuba has been split up for years already in agreements that will be made public once things (if ever) are opened up.
I had dinner with a group of Canadian investors down there with deep pockets, they were building the countries first golf course resort about ten years ago I think.
They told me all the cruise lines, casino's and hotel chains already had the placed carved up and are just waiting for the chance to go in.
And yes they do stamp your passport everytime these days.

I was there for a Christmas holiday and they don`t stamp your passport, only the visitor visa card which you have to give back when leaving the country.

Uhh yah good luck that's almost impossible in Cuba unless you give in to all of the people begging you for money.

Btw, Americans can go to Cuba today you just can't do it from the US.

Maybe... If the new regime is different than the old. I haven't been keeping up to date or anything and maybe it is time to change but I think it would be hard to forget they let Russia set up shop there and point nuclear weapons at us.

I have been poor myself. Even at my lowest point, I would not have wanted to visit or live in a communist country.

What's the average wage in Cuba, is it still $20 a month? How is that anything but awful?

The other poor islands scare me too, communist or not.

Can't wait for Obama to lift the embargo.

I also plan to buy real estate in Cuba. I am looking most at commercial ports.

Ya might want to check your history a bit before ya jump in to real estate in Cuba. Besides being communist, there are some reasons the US has not been on friendlier terms.

This will give ya feel for it:

Law No. 851 gave the president of the Republic and the Prime Minister power to decree joint resolutions to nationalize American properties in Cuba by compulsory expropriation.

Law No. 890 established the Cuba nationalization of companies dealing with sugar, spirits, beverages, soap, perfume, milk products, chemicals, maritime transportation, railway communications, coffee, drugs, etc., irrespective of the owners? nationality.

Law No. 891 declared banking a public function and established the right of reparation for property partners and stockholders of the dissolved and extinct banks. Reparation was to be made effective with a latter payment after the National Bank of Cuba closed banking operations on December 31, 1960.

Law No. 1076 nationalized certain kinds of small retail forms of commerce, also irrespective of former owners? nationality.

Castro came into power in the Late 1950s, he's still around and in power.

There are still people and families around that owned property in Cuba, had it taken away from them and did not receive any compensation. Same applied to corporations.

This may seem like a long time ago and gee how long do ya carry a grudge, but don't think you wanna leave your head in the sand either.
