It boils down to 4 categories - 100% organic, organic, made from organic ingredients, and contains less than 70% organic ingredients.

100% is obvious for most part.
Organic must contain 95% organic ingredients, with 5% consisting of only approved products that are unavailable in organic form.
Made with organic ingredients - contain at least 70% organic ingredients and they can list 3 of them on the label - though they cannot display the USDA organic seal on the package.
Less than 70& - can not use the term organic anywhere on the main display panel, but they can list the specific components in the ingredients section of the information panel.

Fun to think that's just for the organic issue, toss in free range or many others and all sorts of new rules again for a new term.

Honestly I think it just means that the chicken company has a policy to leave the door to the coop open for at least 5 minutes per day. Really just means that the chickens are not kept in "cages".
Does not mean they get up and wonder around outside or anything. If you want that, then you buy your eggs from a local person with chickens. They go outside, eat bugs, scratch in the dirt, and stuff. It is also cheaper but you will be responsible for sometimes washing the eggs to your desired level of clean, and you may get the occasional egg with micro cracks - dual yolks, blood spots, etc.

Some of that GMO stuff is fucking craaaazy. Frankenfoods. I can understand selecting the best traits from within one plant species but cross-species genetic transfers? Talk about unintended consequences.....

That's how it is back in my country, in Europe. Yogurt is good for 2-3 days, bread is good for 3, milk is good for 2. Stopping by a store every day on the way home is the way of life. I agree it is very inconvenient now that I am used to the north American food and its expiry dates

The video on that site is bullshit, typical shit from activists. Maybe some were treated badly but the vast majority are not.

Why is it that I always get to see assorted animal cruelty photos and videos, yet that side never wants to show the results of large scale agriculture. The river pollution, run off damage, so forth?

Pig in a cage < several hundred square mile flume of fucked up water at outlet of river.

That is because they taste the same either way.
You will notice differences if the stuff is coming from a local garden and picked at full ripeness versus standard stuff in stores picked early for transport.

You know you pulled that statistic straight out your ass. For the UK anyway animal welfare on farms is of a very high standard.

Most of my food is organic. When I'm out I don't eat organic unless possible and I still eat junk food now and than that is obviously not organic.

If everyone ate organic, it would only be a few pennies more than normal food.

Once you eat real organic vegetables you can't eat that other stuff any more. Even the eggs from cage-free/free range chickens fed with an organic diet have stronger shells and even smell better when cooked. Those regular eggs are disgusting.

Organic is getting to be big business (and a lot easier to source out as a consumer, thank goodness!) Even Safeway is starting to carry this hormone free, forage-fed beef:

We've recently started eating organic, free range chicken and you can really tell the difference. Here they only cost a couple of more bucks, but it'd a price well worth paying.

the line is quite clear. either a food says "USDA Organic" in which case it is verified to be "organic" according to government standards... or it says "organic" in which case, anyone can use that word anywhere, anyway they want (which people do) and there is nothing stopping them from doing it. you can buy fruit from any producer, take them out of the bag/box, put stickers on them that say "organic", raise the prices and sell them and there is NO law in the US, preventing that from happening.

"Organic" in one of the biggest scams there is. Not because organic foods cost more, but because people just assume organic has a meaning just because the sticker is on the carrot they bought when it may mean absolutely nothing at all.

That is far from accurate. There are label laws in place for just about every product. Organic is a restricted label word having rules to it's usage. I actually already covered this in a prior post about the 4 levels of organic.

Now buying a chicken labeled hormone free is a scam since every chicken in the store is and has been hormone free for decades. Free range is a partial scam as what constitutes free range is a joke.
