                                    but we let the fancy stuff (like steak knives, crystal glasses, etc) that can't go in the dishwasher pile up for a bit before getting to them

                                            It's funny sometimes that all of the pans and dishes and utensils and machines used to prepare a meal.. it takes 3 times the time to cook and clean up than it does to eat the damn meal, lol.
                                            I put the pots and pans in the dishwasher too... They come out sparkling clean! If your dishwasher has a garbage disposal your fine... Throw it all in!!! BUT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE GARBAGE DISPOSAL....
