I think we should always look to space and explore it. Whether that means going back to the moon, flying scientists to mars or robots to Venus. What we can lear is worth the cost and the risk.
Terraforming Mars on the other hand is a waste of money and I agree, we should re-terraform earth first. Our planet's got some dents but its far from being a write-off.
People dream about terraforming mars but I think its impossible. The general idea is to seed it with seeds to grow plants that will create O2, throw in lots of global warming gasses like CO2, CH4, N2O to keep heat in to warm of the planet, etc. But Mars has no magnetic field so solar winds would push any atmosphere we could give it away into space.
I think if Nasa really wants to make space exciting again, they should send scientists to Mars, and a robotic submarine to Europa. It's one of a few really interesting places in SOL that may contain life.
