With my Fireworks Committee I met a woman who runs quilt shop here in town. Obviously not someone I would normally be friends with. She doesn't have a technical bone (or fiber) in her body... But she runs a Facebook page for her business, and a group for local quilters.

Some of these big sites such as Facebook might have killed smaller sites, but instead now people use these big sites to get their message out. It's easier, and because it's easier so many more people are doing it.
Yes, but with that ease of using someone elses platform, you also lose a lot of ability to monetize it. Example I have a sub on reddit that I took over as a abandoned sub with 2k subscribers and its now at 250k subs. I had to work pretty hard with it for the 1st 10-20k sub but after that it sort of grew on its own.. yet I cant monotize that traffic on reddit. If it were a forum it would be making some pretty decent bucks from advertisers because its very niche.

Granted, I wouldn't have 250k members on a forum with out such a big platform like reddit so it's like damn if you do, damn if you dont. It's pretty much the athority site on its niche..

Now on the flip side I could jump start a brick and mortar type business from the sub, but thats not something I'm interested in.
