Take photography for example. Twenty years ago you needed to invest money into a high end camera. Now every fourteen year old kid has a better camera on their phone - and some of them can take great pictures.
It's the same thing with music. Remember when chicks would date you just based on how large your record / tape collection was? LOL. I remember lugging around huge cases with 200 CDs in my car. Now... Everyone has access to every song ever produced.
Technology keeps changing.
I just bought a printer, wireless, and set it up today. Installed it on the network and ..... every computer in the house can use it - no software needed. Amazing.

On one of Kevin Smith's podcast he was talking about how technology has democratized the entertainment industry. It used to be you had to rent a ton of expensive equipment if you wanted to make a movie or record a album/song. Now you can do it all on your phone and laptop. There was a movie recently called Tangerine that was shot entirely on an iPhone and it ended up getting a limited release and made a million dollars at the box office.
It's pretty amazing what people can do now that even 10-12 years ago wasn't possible.
