Forum Software Recommendations

I've always used phpBB. Tried others but I was too used to phpBB. Now I'm setting up a site with a forum. Sort of ...

The site offers products. I wanted to use Wordpress or phpBB and have a post for each item. Questions or comments could be posted. Links to add products to shopping cart would be there. PayPal for sure plus other processor carts will be there.

I haven't used phpBB in ten years and I have no memory so the initial learning curve is steep. Wordpress I know though I still forget things.

Once set up, I can learn vBulletin and others. I have the logo for the site, for Wordpress. I'm sure someone can create.a header for others cheaply.

If you were installing a forum like this, what would you choose and why? Security? Simplicity? No cost? Moderated comments? Only admin posts? Free themes that are simple with custom header? I need all of those but most important is security modules or plugins. I'll backup daily and no credit card details will be on my site, just in case.

If I remember right, most adult sites avoided phpBB. This isn't adult but there has to a reason. My phpBB main site was up for 22 years and hacked once, after I was handling it. During my illness, the ganif never updated it and three years later, it was compromised. No clue how as no one knew to look at logs .

Suggestions, advice, hints, horror stories, offers to configure and install, etc welcomed.
