Climate Change and the Industry

My friend has just returned from the Antarctic, and the threat of climate change was spelled out very clearly in the things he saw. I?m pretty shocked to learn that we have maybe 10 years, If that, to change what we are doing. Most scientists now agree that if we don?t change NOW then basically, were fucked. And we are talking about really serious changes.

So what can we do as an industry to reduce our CO2?

I believe reducing checks would help, but so many people hate Epass and PayPal is a non runner. What happened with that alternative to Epass?

Will any big programs spell out what they are doing to reduce their carbon footprint?

I?m not a big program, just a lowly affiliate. But I will spell out what I?m doing.

I am home based, so I recycle where I can, I use a ?green? electric package where all my electric is from renewable sources (that maybe a UK thing, not sure). I?m about offset my servers carbon emissions (you pay for trees to be planted which cancels out the CO2 your server uses) and as I don?t drive I only use public transport, but I do fly 4-6 times a year, so again I commit to offset those emissions.

I want to start a discussion about this in the industry, who is willing to lead the industry forward in this?

I?m calling out big companies to lead the way.

(I know this will get stupid replies and people who claim most scientists are wrong and somehow they are right, but dont let that put you off, we need to discuss this and do our bit as an industry)

Our Pink Visual division started a "Plant Your Wood" initiative, releasing DVDs with minimal packaging, all made from recycled material, and our offices are decidedly eco-friendly. We have recycling bins everywhere, leave the lights off except on cloudy days (sunny Arizona, so we just open the blinds) and make sure no unnecessary hardware is left running. Last month I accidentally sent my computer into stand-by mode rather than turning it off (a minor goof) and received an automated e-mail from our sys-admin department telling me I had been "busted" wasting energy.

It may sound like little stuff, but if all the hundreds of millions in the industrialized, so-called first world, do their part, we can have an effect.

I ask to show to me how checks cause more C02 emissions over Electronic formats, not to mention how most of them require plastic cards that need to be re issued every couple of years.

Couple pro check arguments to start.
Paper production is good for forests and results in more trees. Instant offset.
Checks are 100% recyclable.
Checks can be used without electricity.
Checks can be produced on recycled paper.
Checks can be produced without fissile fuels or electricity if a company desired.
Checks bio-degrade quickly and are also compostable.

I think it's a good effort for a weird place but every bit helps. I guess even the porn industry can do it's part huh?

Personally my whole life has always been "green" recycling in NYC became the norm when I was only 12 or so. I don't buy big boxed junk and don't eat a lot of garbage like many. I plant "trees" at every chance I get too! But I have been looking into solar powering my home and I hear there are grants for it for the home and business now thanks to one good thing Obama is doing. I would be interested in actually installing solar power to other porn related company's TOO! Once I get it done for myself that is. I'm not exactly licensed electrician....yet.

Is it because of CO2? Us killing trees? Who the fuck knows. But if you look back at history - like twenty years - they've told us we we heating up, then an ice age was coming, and now we are heating up again. Make up your fucking mind.

This is natural. This has been going on since the beginning of time. We've had ice ages, we've had heat waves that make Phoenix look like a fucking picnic. And there is nothing we can do about. Not a damn thing.

With that said.... I recycle everything. It's just common sense. I pay $40 a month for trash. I have to "extra" to recycle. Bullshit. I save up my cans, my plastic, my glass, and once a month I go to the recycle center and trade it in. I usually get about - surprise - $40 back. So basically my recycling efforts pay for my trash removal.

Oh, it's also raining here in California. I have my water turned off. No sense watering the grass when it's raining.

Hey Tricky Dick... I am pretty sure you are Auburn Placer Disposal just like I am. Unless you moved back to the desert. But check your area, they do all the recycling for us. Just throw everything in the same bin and then they have separating machines that take care of it.

I would do it by hand, but it isn't worth the $40 bucks of my time.

Not very warm IMO!

I always recycle and everything and think it's terrible for people litter etc.

Not because global effects but for the look, cleaness, and because of animals.

As far as electric is concerned, get solar energy! not just because it's "green" but to Save money!

And checks? plastic is far more harmful than paper which can be recycled with very little effort.

Plastic has to be melted by factories that use electric.

Recycling paper does require energy, less goes in than out though.
Technically you can use a check at least 1 step less in the energy chain. Yet electronic forms also require energy usage of at least the same.
Checks could be printed without some sort of power - I just said if a company desired. After all we did have printing before electricity. Then hell if they really wanted they could run a press of of pure wind or water power, as they did in past.
Where did you get that less than 1% of checks are composted. We personally compost all of our shredded paper and I would imagine many others do as well - if not again recycled back into paper.

Now you have a plastic card that will technically last forever.
A plastic card that will be updated at least every few years and you can not do anything with the old cards aside from maybe cut coke.
Plastics are fairly vile from a production stand point.
Some plastics can be recycled, most can not and even those that can few facilities have capabilities.
Such cards require actual terminals to be used at locations.
Inside the US checks are of no fee to use, deposit, etc. ATM / card transactions typically have fee's.

Why did canada in general have record lows?

I'm refering to somewhere i know for a fact has had record low temperatures this winter.

Wish people could get over a few areas to squabble about that do not mean shit.

1. Man made versus Cycles of the planet.
Scientists have said both are doing it. Difference is we can alter one of the two and honestly if doing a few things save you money, energy, and pollute less who cares?

2. Global warming, assorted key names.
Been called a lot of things and with all theories things alter and change with new data. If it would of started off as just global climate change people would be bickering a whole shit load less.

3. If shit is hotter in one place, colder in another, more wet in one, or whatever. Just because it did not match whatever keyword you have stuck in your head does not mean shit is altering.

4. Forget air temps, check ocean data - hell even just past 50 years or so.

5. We are too insignificant to do anything to the planet. Forget about small shit like all the plastic crap in the ocean.

I for one am not one of the believe anything hippie types. Hell there are a lot of things I do or think that would make many environmentalists flip. I do not fall for every little green thing that comes along. It typically comes down to just a few factors to me.
Will it save me money. Will it last longer in use. Can it be reused. Will it pollute less in truth. Does it make considerable future sense.

Thinking that we can stop the planet from heating or cooling, is kind of letting the ego run wild. We aren't doing a damn thing to make a difference either direction.

But keeping the planet clean, cleaning up our plastics, spills, waste, etc cleaned up is a good thing. If everything is a phase or a cycle, well then I don't want that trash in my food in water, or anyones as it cycles through, today or 1000 years from now.

C02 is good, to much of it is bad. Not real hard to understand and it can be shown in scale models very easily. Tree's also can only eat so much. PS when they burn they release that c02. Yet never mind on that one.

Who cares what people of power give a fuck about? Really think car companies are really people of power? Yes that movie had a point. It also was over handled just like super size me. Yes they destroyed them. They also did build them and set out some for beta testing. They just had their own reasons for caving at the end and odds are it was just profit related and being short sighted.
This movie is always brought up though. Yet for a long time electric automobiles were the top selling type in the US until the big gas push. See very few spouting off about that though, even in the assorted car company/gas companies current conspiracy theories.

PS - I think it will need more than 1 type of vehicle in the future. Fuck the idea of just one fuel type. So far hydrogen and air seem good. Electric could be an eventual if we can produce it better without so much fuel.
